40 Kirsten Brockman F 6-0 So* 1V Snohomish, Wash. (Snohomish)
55 Cameo Hicks G 5-10 Fr HS Tracy, Calif. (M.F. West)
Silly Number Trivia: more number switching than usual. Jill Bell went
from #25 to #1, Andrea Lalum picked #5 from her senior year. Apparently
she decided quite early on to use a different number every year, so she
ended up going 40-21-3-5. Angie Jones flipped from #12 to #21;
hopefully her luck will flip around this year too. The real weirdness?
If I read the media guide right, this will be the first year since
1974-75 that no UW player picked #24. That was the first year of WBB
being a varsity sport, and the SID office doesn't have roster info for
it, so it might be the first time ever. Bell, however, is the first
Husky ever to use #1. (#0, #00, and #2 remain untouched.)
Schedule---
Quick Hits: the opening couple tournaments look a little thin. Hawaii
is hosting the one there, and they'll probably be tough on their home
floor, though. The Seattle Times Classic is somewhat interesting, with
a theoretically-much-improved Gonzaga team coming to possibly renew an
in-state rivalry (haven't seen the matchups) that stopped in the late
90s. Don't know what to expect from Oklahoma State, but it's a chance
for UW to get revenge for a 1999 title game loss. Yale is mainly
interesting right now since I'm going to apply to their chief rival
(i.e., Harvard) for doctoral studies. After that, things get tougher,
with Notre Dame and Texas Tech visiting and a road game at Colorado.
Denver also drops by, and the Ames half of the UW-ISU home-and-home is
the last NC game on 12/22.

What you fail to mention is how UDub will do in the Pac-10 and perhaps an
automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. Stanford had been dominating the Pac-10
of late and they have the same players coming back from last year, though
Nicole Powell will be on her last (senior) year. Arizona will have Polkey
who will have had another year of experience, not to mention the play she
has had with the USA Young Women's team. I say Stanford will probably win
the Pac-10 and the Pac-10 tourney, though just like last, year, UDub and
Zona will make it to the NCAA post season. Unfortunately, someone else on
this board has mentioned that the Pac-10 teams have had a terrible record in
the tourney of late. UDub and Zona lost in the first round, IIRC, and
Stanford lost in the 2nd to Minnesota.

Yeah, I concur on the top 3. I don't want to make any serious guesses
yet, since I don't really have much of an idea what UW has. I hear good
things about the freshman class though. ASU might be interesting too.
They weren't that good last year, but they lost their leading returning
scorer and rebounder (2 players) in the first two weeks of practice,
which, in retrospect, really knocked down their chances. Keeping
everybody healthy wil probably result in a (big?) improvement. I think
UCLA will be a pleasant surprise, leaving potential coach problems out
of the equation for now. >> Stay informed about: 2003-04 Washington Roster and Schedule |

I would agree with you regarding ASU. After all, they did win the inaugural
Pac-10 tournament 2 years ago, beating Stanford in the final game. However,
I wonder what makes you say that UCLA could be a surprise. After losing
Michelle Greco, their leading scorer last year, some people, aside from
Nikki Blue, would really have to pick up the slack for them to be
competitive. As for Kathy Olivier, any inside information about her, or were
you alluding to perhaps some of her assistants?

I KNEW that ND would be playing Washington (or WSU) this year or next
(Due to Borton, who is from Washington). I kept checking the schedules
this year in order to figure out ND's noncoference schedule before the
official ND schedule is released some time in Sept.
