'Fun town' is likely not by the main reason Free Agents go to Florida and
Texas teams...but the 2 main reasons would hold for nevada....#2 is weather
#1 is there is no state income tax.

The weather is not a good reason to move here...homes ARE real cheap here
right now...soooo many new homes they can't sell makes my house worth MUCH
less than it should be...
also Vegas would have trouble selling 10,000 tickets to any BBall game that
din't include the Lakers. They would have to comp about half those tickets
and still would not get the fans away from the tables...locals won't pay...
the tax is the only eason to come here...nothing like a team full of
players choosing a team based on taxes instead of rings... >> Stay informed about: Admiration for Shaq... |

Orlando's tax environment helps them too.

I've wondered about the largely transient population there as well. Would
it support any major sport? I have my doubts, but it's really uncharted
territory so uncertain.
It could be that casinos buying season tix for comps would be enough almost
by itself, I really have no idea.

40 million visitors per year might get their share...
http://www.inbusinesslasvegas.com/2007/03/16/tourism.html
NBC tourism guru Peter Greenberg says he thinks who is on the team will
dictate whether tourists will want to see it. A flashy favorite like LeBron
James, Kobe Bryant or Steve Nash could draw crowds every night, he said,
just as Michael Jordan helped fill arenas nationwide when he played.
In addition, the Las Vegas Oscars probably would take some cues from the
Orlando Magic, an NBA team in a city that may best mirror Las Vegas. A team
spokesman said the Magic works closely with Orlando hoteliers and the Orange
County Convention and Visitors Bureau to identify potential group sales.
Large groups meeting in Orlando for trade shows, meetings and conferences
look to games as potential entertainment outings.
While the team wouldn't disclose what percentage of its business is in group
sales, the impression left was that it is pretty good.
So if a team can influence the NBA schedule-makers to plant a few home games
around the Global Gaming Expo, the Consumer Electronics Show and the
National Association of Broadcasters (what a match - the NAB at the NBA), it
could assure that many of the 20,000 seats at a new arena wouldn't go empty.
But a team can't be too reliant on tourists. A healthy season-ticket base
would be critical to the success of any franchise locating here.
=============
And seems to me things like a very small TV market, and half the residents
working at night. would not be made up with tourists
==============
25 years ago an NBA team only half fill the Thomas and Mack center.
It has hosted the NBA before. Besides the all-star game and the
Lakers/Blazers playoff game in
83-84 the jazz played about 1/4 of their home games in Vegas and a couple
the next year.
Cap broke Wilt's scoring record at the T&M center against the Jazz and
that game drew 10k.
But the city has about doubled in poulation since then.

That's the big income stream -- business suites. I think casinos and
convention travel might do it. And then you market the NBA game
experience as just another alternative to Blue Man Group or Cirque
for the tourists.
Hm. You kind of want to put the arena right at one of the hotels for
that, don't you? That'd be interesting. The arena at the MGM Grand
is big enough, but would they want to tie it up for 41 nights a year?

not uncharted territory...they won't support a team here...just a fact...too
many gamblers that would rather get a quick fix...most only watch the last 5
minutes of a game...

years ago Caesars tried to run the Gran Prix here...they came in and asked
the casino manager to buy some tickets for his guests...he said in his most
threatening voice...my players ain't going nowhere...he was a wise guy and
was in on the skim...so he was doing his job...
of course if corporate america is stupid enough to let their 'golden gooses'
walk from the table they should probably take lessons from the Chicago mob... >> Stay informed about: Admiration for Shaq... |

not going to happen...been living here for 31 years...only the Lakers and the
Rebels(but only when the Rebels were winning)sell out games...just a
fact...great for allstar games and maybe a couple regular season 'exhibtion'
games...but never 41 nights...not even with half comps... >> Stay informed about: Admiration for Shaq... |

So would Stern have to fix the lottery or do they just need to move the
Spurs to Vegas and let them tank?
