Release point is from an awkward angle. With normal shots, you can
get a hand in the shooter's face to challenge. Jabbar used the arm
bar + the width of his body (shoulder to shoulder), so it was very
difficult. He also had great leaping ability, so many times defenders
just stood there looking up helplessly.
Only thing to do was double team or push him outside his comfort
zones. It could be blocked by someone coming from the weak side (when
he swung into the middle), or by slapping the ball away during the
upward motion. In theory, someone could block it from behind also.
But unlikely due to his height, and it's gambling. It probably
produces a foul or leaves a man free for offensive rebounding.
