It's Sunday, I'm bored, and I'm procrastinating cleaning up the
atrociousness of an apartment that has fallen into disrepair from the week
that my wife has been away on business. So, rather than clean, I read
through several of Bill Simmons' gargantuan articles on page2. Now, I find
Simmons stuff ranges from "mildly amusing" to "pretty hilarious", but I
generally always enjoy reading his stuff. But I also know a lot of people
have a serious hate-on for him. I'm curious what everyone else thinks. Keep
in mind - I don't read Simmons for insightful sports "journalism", I read
him for the amusing 90210 and Karate Kid references.

Thoughts?

--- It's energy best expended when you have none left for more
"challenging" material. I probably pop into "Page 2" about once a
month for a giggle.

--- You bring up a good point that speaks also to the notion of
"blogs" in general (which is really all that Simmons' stuff is.) -
But, could you not expand that to include editorial writing of any
kind (Blogs 1.0)? A few years ago, I found myself drawn to certain
editorial writers (for un-named newspapers) whose opinions closely
matched with mine. I loved it! "See, look, I *am* right about all that
stuff!!! I AM SO SMRT!!!" After a while, the pointlessness of solely
reading those who think *just like you do* occurred to me (not that I
would say that that was exclusively what was garnered from those
readings), and I now seek out any and all opinions, purposely looking
for perspectives different from mine so that I can either challenge or
alternately learn from them.

Back to your point: I would say that if you find sources that you can
trust (reasonably) on topics meaningful to you, learning is what is
gained from OPO.

And there's always the letters to the editor...

Yeah. I don't understand punditry. I mean, Simmons may be a funny guy, a
good writer, and a perceptive observer -- but I can't seem to summon the
energy to read any of these guys on a regular basis. If I need opinions,
I'll head to usenet.

There is a larger point in the previous paragraph. Why do people care about
other people's opinions? I mean, I care about yours, because, after all,
we're here talking to each other. But reading Simmons is like a one-sided
conversation, and I'm on the listening side. What fun is that? I have
opinions too! Listen to me!

I don't know... we had some solid contribution from the wing when AP was
on the floor. I suppose these guys give us a second option besides AP
when Bosh gets double-teamed.

> - Will Baston have an meaningful impact?

I doubt it. Though we do have Colangelo at the helm, putting any hopes
whatsoever on non-NBA talent joining the roster is kind of fruitless. I
learned with the Nate Huffman / Pape Sow / Maceo Baston (first time) to
not expect a damn thing besides "potential".

I could never see either one on court again and be satisfied.

Not a damn thing until he makes an impact in an NBA game.

Who's Princess?

I still don't think this is our final roster... someone has to be traded
for a decent big man.

No and no, no, don't know but I'll guess the latter, no idea, and stay.

I'm going to read some of my poetry for you. I normally don't let people see
this side of me, but I want to share with you. Let me just get my notebook
-- it's under my tear-stained pillow.

If you do any amount of publishing polemical writing, you'll most likely
come to the troubling conclusion that a high percentage -- depending on
mood, I'd put it from 75-95% -- of people are largely interested in
reading things that confirm what they already believe.

Yes, however, nobody besides Brother P consistently contributed, next on
the depth chart is Juan Dixon. It seems to me that Kapano and Delfino
can be better than Dixon, and thus if Kopana is a starter and Delfino
plays significant minutes this will improve what to me seemed like the
biggest shortcoming of last years team: insufficient contribution from
the wing.

I pointed out this shortcoming several times during the season:

I hope Kapono and Delfino, plus maybe L-Jack, Princess, and Jammin'
Jamario can help.

Well, certainly Calderon, Garbajosa and Parker should give you hope.

Giorgos "Princess" Printezis

In case you haven't noticed previously, I have this predilection to
promote ludicrous nicknames.

In a 9 man rotation, which Sam has said is his plan, there isn't really
room for more than 4 big men, so Bosh, Bargnani, Rasho and Garbajosa is
it. Which of those do think we can replace with an improvement? Baston
and Humphries should be good enough for bench players/reserves no?

I think having Kapano at SF means that Garbajosa can play the 4, which
is a more natural position for him.

I'm pretty comfortable with a 4 man ration of Bosh, Bargnani, Rasho and
Garbajosa at the PF/C position and do not really see a weakness here.

Oooh boy. When you're done can I read your Tarot?

I'm a big fan. He's easily my favorite writer, and I do read him for
"insightful sports" (as well as the fun stuff) since it's his own
opinions based on watching the games rather than parroting the
conventional media wisdom. Obviously nobody's going to agree with
everything he comes out with.
