Southern Cal fires women's basketball coach

March 17, 2004
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chris Gobrecht was fired as Southern California's
women's basketball coach Wednesday.

Gobrecht was 93-108 in seven seasons at the school and never got the Trojans
to the NCAA tournament. USC was 15-13 this season.

``This was a very difficult decision because Chris meant a lot to the Trojan
family, but we felt it was time for our women's basketball program to go in
a different direction,'' athletic director Mike Garrett said.

Gobrecht, a former USC player, is 425-311 in 25 years as a Division I head
coach. She also coached at Cal State-Fullerton, Washington and Florida State
before coming to USC in 1997.

Well, here's hoping she catches on somewhere else
where she can keep visiting PAC-10 schools. It is
**such** fun for us fans to yell "SIT DOWN, CHRIS!"
whenever she's stamping up and down the sidelines
hectoring the refs. It really got the crowd into
the game when the Women of Troy came to call.

Plus, she's the only female coach I know who can be
counted on to get 2 or 3 "T"s a season for mouthing
off to officials. And there's her easy, informal ways
with the press, as when she was quoted as saying of
the NCAA selection committee, "They don't know squat."

Bring excitement to your program! Hire Chris!

Thanks God we still have Kathy Olivier at UCLA, or will she suffer the same
fate. Anyway, Kathy seems to have adopted the Chris Gobrecht approach and
has been complaining and bickering almost as much this year. I actually
heard chants of "Sit Down Kathy" both at Maples and at Haas.

I took that as desperation. It's almost as if she knows her job is hanging in
the balance and she needs to get off her ass and at least look like she's
coaching. Of course, standing or sitting, she's clueless.

Rumor has it that USC talked to Cheryl Miller. So there's always that to hope
for.

:-)

I hope the USC athletic department selects an excellent coach as it is
certainly one of the best positions in all of woman's basketball. A decent
recruiter has the talent rich So California to mine and the extremely
talent-poor Pac 10 to dominate. What could be sweeter? It sure beats the heck
out of trying to crack into the Big 12 or SEC.
