"We didn't think it was going to be an easy game coming in, and it
wasn't," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "We knew it was going to be very
physical. It was a very emotional game. We battled our best, but we
just didn't have enough in the end."
"They made shots in overtime and we didn't," Nelson said. "We
struggled. We turned the ball over too much. We thought there should
have been fouls called, but they ended up being turnovers."
Mavs owner Mark Cuban was the most vocal critic. He pointed to at
least six instances of calls he felt were blown, including Dirk
Nowitzki's sixth foul and a critical out-of-bounds play that went to
the Grizzlies in overtime.
"I don't care if I get fined," a frustrated Cuban said in the locker
room after the loss. "Referees are having far too much impact on the
game."
Cuban spoke to the league office about officiating after the Mavs'
victory at San Antonio. Another call is surely coming.
"It was crazy. Absolutely crazy," he said. "How can they have that
much impact?"
Nash said simply: "It was laughable."
"We lost the game in the last few minutes of regulation," Nash said.
"We certainly didn't get any help along the way, but we had our
chances." >> Stay informed about: Cuban irate with officials in Mavs' overtime loss |

Is there any franchise that is so associated with whiners? I mean, has
Cuban ever criticized officials that helped his team win.
What a joke.

Yep. And it resides in Sacto. Just imagine if Vlade was traded to Dallas.

Sacramento yes, they are in the same league. Porty, no way, they don't
even whine as much as LA.

Right now it is just Cuban, hasn't infected the players or Coach much.
Oh, they whine, but not any more than most coaches or players.
Dallas is at a crossroad-they can easily become like Portland and
Sacto, immensely talented, yet a losing, victim mentality. Cuban
really should just shut up, or complain about reffing across the
board, even when it hurts his team.

Portland has quieted down, but two or three years ago, they whined
with the best of them and highlighted the victim 'why are the refs
picking on me' mentality. Particularily Wallace and Stoudamire.

marcus, please allow me to introduce you to the mavs' coach. his name is
don nelson.

this is true, the players stick to playing for the most part.

exactly. sadly, i think he really believes his own "the whole league is
against us" BS--i don't think it's just gamesmanship to put pressure on the
refs to go easy on his team.

Agreed! LA takes the cake in terms of whining. Phil Jackson supposedly
teaches and encourages his players to work the refs on each and every call.
That's part of their overall plan and strategy in winning a game. Also,
Jackson himself is a master in working the refs.

payton constantly complains on calls, malone is pretty vocal too. kobe was
the team leader in this dept until the new guys came along. really, the
rest of the team is pretty quiet in this regard, with occasional outbursts
from george and fisher.
jackson is one of the more sedate coaches in the league, he hardly stands up
let alone audibly complains to the refs. if he's "whining" then it's hard
to imagine what you'd call what the really vocal coaches (nelson, adelman,
popovich, etc).

Nellie whines a 1000 times more than PJ after a game. You should hear
him every time they play Karl Malone. Sheesh, old man Nellie tried to
take Karl on one game. >> Stay informed about: Cuban irate with officials in Mavs' overtime loss |

Phil complains far more to the media and after games than most other
coaches. Call it gamesmanship if you would like, it is still
complaining. Pop and Nellie work the refs hard during the game, but
are not as apt to criticize them after the game.
