There aren't really any salary considerations when talking about
swapping one rookie contract for another.
I can only speculate that the idea is to send cancer-boy packing with
a buyout and get him gone. If they do that, at the PG they
have...Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, and Mardy Collins, none of whom
are PGs.
On the other hand, while David Lee is probably better at his position
than Felton is at his, at the 4 on the Knicks they've got Zach
Randolph and Gallinari to play the 4, as well as all of the scrubs if
they're in a pinch (Rose, Randolph Morris etc). So I would guess that
W/D' is thinking it's better to have every base covered adequately
than have a shining light in one spot (the backup 4) and a gaping hole
in another (the starting PG). Which maks sense, but it does bring
into question how far a real blow-up is on the priority list.
Most of the time in the last two years' train wreck, when the Knicks
were vaguely competitive it was with their second unit (Robinson, Lee,
etc). I'd personally probably rather see them keep Lee and start
Jamal at the 1, Chandler at the 2, Richardson at the 3 (by default),
Lee at the 4 and Randolph at the 5. Bring Nate, Balkman, Gallinari
(if he really comes to NY) and either Curry or Randolph Morris off the
bench and there's your nine man rotation. If they lose, they lose.
In the meantime, they can keep trying to clear it out.
The right move for Lee, bearing the oh-so-important future in mind
that Walsh said he was committed to, is not a rook-for-rook swap. The
right move is "You can have David Lee, but you gotta take Jared
Jeffries or Eddy Curry and his contract with you". 'Cause when you
give up Lee, there's almost no way to trade anyone else.
Having instead Felton/Crawford/Richardson/Randolph/Curry with a
Robinson/Jeffries/Gallinari/Jerome James bench as your setup isn't
going to be that much better. It's going to be treading water in the
same dismal pool we've been in for some time now.
