His other choices tend to get a bit flustered with pressure on them.
They'll get more playing time during many Big East league
games/blowouts.
Lack of depth will improve when Wilnett Crockett comes back full
strength. She has only begun playing and going 100% in practice during
the last 4-5 days. She was important in March last year.
Believe me, the team and Geno had very little concern for preserving
any streak. Their main focus is always on playing as well as they can.
Wins come from that.
I noticed that DT looked a bit tired in the _first_ half. Those who
follow UCONN closely know they take the physical part of their training
beyond virtually any other program in women's BB. I think some of their
fatigue was from their hard training in the days before this game.
We've seen this before but in March they back off the physical training
so they can "peak", and this is why they tend to be relatively strong
in March. There's more damage done by resting too much before a January
game.
I can think of many reasons why UCONN will be better off from losing
this game. In watching Geno during the game he sometimes showed that
the win or loss was not vital, like it was for Duke. It wouldn't
suprise me if his team was pushed hard the last few days in practice to
put them at a slight handicap for this game so they could experience
something that will be useful for the team later on. DT has said that
the Notre Dame loss helped them win the NC the following year.
