The Nets aren't trying to catch the Celts. They're setting up for
LeBron. In 2010, they're gonna have Vince Carter, Yi Jianlian, and
Devin Harris on the roster at 30 million... and nothing else. Carter's
contract expires in 2011, so if he's not productive at that point he's
a valuable trade chip.
That's a brilliant trade. You have a competent point guard, a guy who
may be an excellent PF, and an All-Star as a supporting cast for LeBron,
who'll still be the best player in the league at that point.

And why would Lebron want to go to NJ with that roster? It's awful. Nope.
No chance. >> Stay informed about: East Conference Teams Trying to Catch Celts... |

Maybe so, but there is also the chance they have a competent PG, a PF who
never developed, and an over the hill SG who was always overrated -
regardless of Jay-Z, James might not want anything to do with that.

No, no, of course not. You're misunderstanding. He'll be worth little
as a player. He'll be worth something as an expiring contract. Teams
like expiring contracts -- without Ratliff we'd never have gotten
Garnett, after all.

Yeah. Now, overall... I don't think the Nets are going in the right
direction, because you're risking too much on the quest for more cap
space. I mean, LeBron might decide not to come, as you noted. But
they're executing the strategy well, for all the good it'll do 'em.

Counting on LeBron -- or any player -- to defect via FA is a HUGE risk
(unless, of course, you're the Lakers and blatantly tamper with a
player and the league lets you do it because you're the Lakers).
Nobody will be able to offer LeBron more money than Cleveland will, so
if he leaves the Cavs it would be for a team with a legitimate shot at
winning it all. The Cavs should be contenders for years to come -- I
mean, heck, they made it to the Conference Semi-Finals this year,
losing in 7 games to the eventual champs. Can't possibly consider
that a bad year, can you? They were probably the fourth best team in
the league (and some would argue the third best), have a young
nucleus... can't see LeBron leaving his home town for a lesser team. >> Stay informed about: East Conference Teams Trying to Catch Celts... |

Too bad for them. They were one of the teams that really were a player a
away when they had Kidd/Carter/Jefferson. No they're lotto bound for a long
long long time. >> Stay informed about: East Conference Teams Trying to Catch Celts... |
