Are the Kings going to cut him loose?

Rick himself seems to think so. According to Dwight Janes of the
Portland Tribune Rick put out feelers a couple of months ago to the
open University of Portland coaching job, but UP wasn't willing to
wait. Janes would know. Don't forget that he co-wrote Adelman's book.

I understand why UP waited, but it seems that if a pro coach, who would
bring FAR more credibility than some assistant coach that I bet 90% of
Portland couldn't even name *today*, let alone when it happened, you'd
wait.

Rick would be wise to take some time off, and not jump into another
fire. Give him some time to self reflect, etc.

Likely exactly what he thought of a college job in his home town...

IIRC he still lives in Portland in the off season.

ooh, I thought you meant home town in the "where he's from" sense, not
home base home town.

I bet if UO has another bad season, that he could get the coaching spot
there without much hassle

I didn't know Ernie Kent is in trouble.

But seriously why would Adelman want a college job? It's much less
money, and requires recruiting. Then you have to please the alumni.
Definitely not easy compared to pro coaching. I don't think he'll have
much trouble landing another pro coaching job. If he wants to take it
easy, he can always be an assistant with any of his coaching friends.

they haven't had a good season in like 3 years, and there was a bit of
a egg on face moment this season for them and him.

I'm sure that if he made UP into a winner, that'd be a huge thing on
his resume. And I don't know if him having to "please the alumni" is
any different than having to "please the owner/GM" especially when you
cnsider the UP job would be much more low-key and not in the eye of the
public. And he'd be closer to an area he likes more (and according to
LT, still has a home).

I doubt that money is an issue for Rick, as he's been an NBA coach,
basically, every year for the last 18 years now. I'm sure he's not
hurting.

This season they lose several games by very thin margins, losing at the
end of each, IIRC. At least they were competitive in those.

I do not know if he would. He only said the timing was bad when asked.

http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/basketball/kings/story/14241120p-...60701c.
Q You were asked up in Portland about the Portland job. (According to the Portland Tribune,
Adelman - who has a home in Portland and plans to retire there - is on a list of candidates to fill
the vacancy for the men's basketball team at the University of Portland.) Are there just all kinds
of possibilities out there for you?

A: Yeah, but, see, that's the problem. I always found that (transitioning from) a pro job to a
college job is not compatible because our season ends after the time when those people have to (hire
a coach). The only guy I ever knew that took off (from a pro job) and took a college job was Larry
Brown, who has experienced every part of the coaching carousel you can experience. It's just not
good timing, and it's not the proper thing to even discuss. But my name in Portland is going to be
brought up all the time. So that's why I say, when this is said and done, then we look at what we
want to do.

Q: How much will the personal side factor in?

A: A lot of it. You know, I've got a senior (son) who is going to be in high school (in Granite
Bay), who doesn't necessarily know if he's going to be there. Maybe if I don't coach, we'll just be
there for the eight months to get him through and then see what we're going to do.

We've got choices. It's not something that we've discussed over and over and over again. I think
when the season ends, within a short time, I'll feel pretty comfortable about what I feel like I
want to do. Whether Sacramento is part of that, I don't know, because that's up to them, but there
are other things that can happen, too, so I'll just wait and see.
