Already posted on Piston.com.
Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars
announced today that Flip Saunders will not return next season as the
team’s head coach.
“Decisions like this are difficult to make, especially with the
success we have had throughout the last three regular-seasons,” Dumars
said. “However, at this time, I feel it is necessary to make a change.
I thank Flip for his hard work and dedication, but it is time for a
new voice to lead our team.”
The search begins and Avery Johnson is not the answer. He couldn't
get Dallas over the hump. I doubt he could get Detroit over it
either.

Yeah, because you brought in Saunders, so to fire him, you would be
admitting you made a mistake.

That's a backhanded compliment for Saunders.

The Pistons made it to 2 straight Finals before Saunders, and he took
them to 3 straight ECFs. So the Pistons actually got worse under
Saunders.

He choked in the Finals, and choked in 2 straight first rounds. Joe
would be an idiot to hire a choker like Avery.

I think you can. He changed the guys out on the floor in the 4th
quarter. He had a group that was scoring and defending. He brought
Sheed and McDyess (I think it was) back in and the Celtics pulled away
while the Pistons didn't score.

I felt this year was the best he had done as a coach. Developed a couple of
young players so that they gave solid contributions in the playoffs and
Stuckey now looks like a future star. Dumars expressed that he was upset at
Afflalo didn't get more playing time but I never saw anything from him that
showed he deserved it.
It's not really Flip's fault that Sheed went insane for the 2nd year in a
row in the conference finals. I mean you can pin it on the coach if you want
but he has had exactly one coach that has ever been able to control him so. >> Stay informed about: Flip fired |

Err, meant Amir not Afflalo. Got my A's messed up. >> Stay informed about: Flip fired |

Well, Game 6 of the Boston series was the only game of the playoffs I
didn't see (in Canada on business), so I don't know exactly what
happened. But blaming a coach for putting in his starters when his
team has a lead in the 4th quarter of an elimination game seems a bit
odd. Suppose Flip had left in a couple of bench players and they had
blown the lead?
Oh well, it's all moot now. -- Joe >> Stay informed about: Flip fired |

It seems to me the old adage of you stay with who is hot until they
are not applies here. Flip didn't wait for his bench guys to cool
off. He brought back a couple of starters who other than rebounding
hadn't done much else the whole game.
