I think the Giddens pick is brilliant by Ainge. High end talent, and
with a championship team fronted by Garnett and Pierce to help the kid
screw his head on straight...could be a big time steal. I love that
Ainge rolled the dice from the bottom of the draft....

I've watched Giddens play, and he is talented, but the Celts had
bigger needs than off-guard. Let's assume that this move signifies
that the player they intend to let go is Tony Allen--a bench player
who made little impact. Why worry about replacing Allen when they
didn't rely on him? A better move would be solidifying the depth
inside--a big man who can keep Perkins healthy and out of foul
trouble.

I'm okay with the Giddens pick for one reason: rebounds. He crashes
the boards like a forward. If Giddens can be coached to assume a
largely defensive/rebounding role he will be valuable. I would rather
they went big, and safe. They could have locked up a playoff berth
for years to come with a big powerful inside rebounder and defender.
(DeAndre Jordan, Petrovic, Asik, etc.) Hopefully they find a way to
address the depth at center in free agency.

We still need a big. I mean, OK, we drafted for talent rather than for
need, which I generally approve of, but man do we need a big.

Jamaal Magloire have anything left? He'd be cheap, he used to be a
10 PPG/8 rebounds type.

Chris Andersen, I guess. Maybe Lorenzen Wright? I'm reaching. There
are a lot of guys out there who can score a few points in 15 minutes per
game, but none of them excite me. I think Magloire would be the best of
an indifferent free agent group.

I bet Ben Pepper is still available.

To me he'd be an older, less talented Perkins. Just as slow and laboring.
Nah. There must be better.

Neither one excites me, though had we talked about PJ Brown last off season
I'd have said the same thing.

Awww shucks... ;)

I plan on popping by once in a while...it will probably be a gradual
thing. As I get further past the rough spots I hit, I'll have more
time for distractions of a more positive nature...

3-4 years, he'll be fine. But he won't be as effective for as long as
Kareem was. Kareem was one of those players that had an unstoppable move
that he could always go to. KG is not like that. He plays all out with a
level of athleticism that Kareem could never match. He'll burn out faster
just because of his intensity alone.

Think about what KG does...After the C's make a basket, he'll often apply a
varying amount of pressure on the inbound pass. Then he'll find the ball
and defend it (again, with a varying amount of pressure depending on the
game situation) as it comes up the court. He'll then pass the player off to
someone else and drop into the paint. Then he'll defned anything that comes
into the paint and/or grab the rebound. Kareem never did any of that.

How about luring Zo back from retirement? He's big, and he might hold
on for a year as a backup.

Yep -- he's got a year left on his contract over there, and he probably
needs the time to develop.

I disagree. There's not a player in the basketball who can stop his
turn around jumper out to 15'. It's unblockable unless a
double-teamer gets a piece of it from behind. He can always go to
that shot.

you're missing the point - a jumper become less *accurate* (not less
*available*) as a player ages and their legs go. nobody doubts the
shot will be available - i share bob's doubt that he'll be able to
*make* it as reliably in 3-4 years. the hook relies the least on the
legs of any shot, and when it's being taken from 12-15 feet like
kareem routinely did, you can still make it.

but accuracy drops for most guys with increased distance, moreso as
they get older.

If you are talking about how long KG will be effective and HOW effective, it
won't be as long as Kareem was. If we're talking 3-4 more years, I already
agreed.

Maybe that jumper is "unblockable" but when his legs start to go, so does
the jumper. Jabbar could have shot the skyhook until he was 50 if he had
wanted to.

You've also got to consider that other teams would rather give up a 15 foot
turnaround to KG than to have him within 10 feet of the basket.

A large portion of why it's such a deadly shot is due to KG's height,
wingspan and his release, which occurs with his arms nearly fully
extended upwards, and the amount of arch he puts on it. And it's not
as if in 4 years, at 36 years of age, KG will suddenly be limited to a
20" vertical. I believe he'll have that shot reliably available in
his arsenal for as long as he wants to play.
