Kobe Won't Sign an Extension with LA Yet
Posted: 8/9/2008 7:22:00 AM
Source: Yahoo!
Kobe Bryant won’t sign a contract extension with the Los Angeles
Lakers until he has tested the global market, the U.S. Olympic
basketball star told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday.
Asked whether he plans to solicit overseas offers before signing an
extension, Bryant flatly said yes.
It’s possible Bryant could leave the NBA for Europe – perhaps in a
dual role of owner and player – as early as next summer. Bryant is
signed with the Lakers through the 2010-11 season, but can opt out
after next season.
Suddenly, the best player in the world seems determined to pair the
changing global economics with his unparalleled popularity to create
an international bidding war. A day earlier, Bryant told the Boston
Globe that he would consider a $50 million offer to play in Europe.
“As players, the business of the game (is) evolving,” Bryant said
before a Team USA practice at Beijing Normal University. “I think free
agency now is becoming a global thing …. When players become free
agents, the team they’re currently with – their competition is no
longer the rest of the teams in the NBA. But it’s global. So, the
market’s opened up. So we’ll just have to see how the league responds
to it.”
Bryant spent several years of his childhood in Italy and loves it
there. Seven years ago, he bought an ownership stake in Olimpia Milano
of the Italian league for his father Joe to run. When Bryant was asked
whether he held intrigue with owning and playing on a team together,
he said, “Absolutely.”
Some basketball executives believe Bryant’s ultimate ambition might be
to have a majority ownership with a powerhouse Italian team while
serving as its superstar. What’s more, Bryant, 29, insists that it
wouldn’t be such a leap of faith for him to leave the NBA. >> Stay informed about: Good Riddance |

if kobe or any other american nba superstar left the nba for another
country they would be hated by american fans so much, it would destroy
there career. why even play in the olympics if you are willing to turn
your back on your own country ? >> Stay informed about: Good Riddance |

Just about every American corporation has turned it's back on it's own
country by your standards. Why single out an American basketball player
in this case? In fact, lots of American athletes have played
professionally in other countries, so Kobe would hardly be the first,
although he would be younger than most.

Other than the fact that he would be HUGELY popular in whatever country he
played for, as well as FABULOUSLY wealthy, why yes, it would ruin his NBA
career.
:-)
Sucks that loyalty no longer enters the equation, but that's not a new thing

The NBA having some competition will be a good thing in the long run for
everyone but the owners pocket books.

Loyalty is in the contract...and it says if they trade you that in 48 hours
you will be loyal to the next team...
If someone offered you 4 times the net pay to work in Italy you might have
to wonder how loyal you are to an employer. One that you have already helped
make him hundreds of millions in profits you do not owe more.

My belief that Kobe would be a Laker for life has always been predicated
upon the fact that first and foremost, no other NBA team could offer him as
much money as the Lakers. I didn't factor in an offer from outside the
league.
If Kobe gets an offer of $50 mil per year and ownership of some Euro team, I
wouldn't blame him for leaving, although I'de be mighty disappointed.

It is bigger than the surface too. Delfino is making more in Russia than
his countryman Ginobli will net in the NBA.
Delfino I have seen
as high as 20 million for 3 years, in Europe that is net after taxes, so
6.67 per. If it is
the high end of that he would likely net more than Manu.
Manu makes 9.9 mil next year.
If 100% of his income is taxable (which it is not of course)...he would net
about 6.44 after federal taxes.
The players and coaches pay states taxes for away games for whatever state
they are playing in. (this is fairly unique to sports)
Each game is 1/90 of the total pay as preseason counts the same.
Texas like Florida has no state income tax, so over half his money is at
least free of that part of taxes.
Plus in Euroleague they get living expenses or houses, cars, stuff whatever,
all against the rules in the NBA. Throw in the exchange rate...
So if Kobe or LeBron get a 50 mil contract it would be maybe 3 times as much
as the NBA.

This could be even bigger than the prospect of Kobe leaving the Lakers

Nah. They will change a few rules and give the players more to stay. There
are not many big arenas or rich teams. For the couple handing out big
contracts there are several that have 5 mil or less entire payrolls.
Meantime it is a great barganing chip for players that will be restricted
free agents to negociate extensions.
Also the NBA plans in a few years to put a 5 team division in Europe and the
NBA will be in direct competition with euroleague.

have you ever traveled to europe ? the travel time is extreme it would

The NBA disagrees, they are seriously looking at a five team expansion to
Europe in the next decade.

LeBron James more or less echoed Kobe's response when the same
question was subsequently put to him.
Even if they don't believe it in their hearts, players such as Kobe
and LeBron and other NBA superstars are almost obliged to respond that
they will keep their options open for overseas play. Without it,
they'll have much less leverage to negotiate terms of new contracts
with their current teams. It would be foolish (though noble) to do
otherwise.
If such an option were available to the NBA stars of yesteryear
(Magic, Bird, Jordan, etc.), they would likely have had to respond the
same way. >> Stay informed about: Good Riddance |

Now not only Kobe and LeBron have spoken about being open to the
possibility of playing overseas, but Dwayne Wade has as well.
So if you're trying to hang this on Kobe as a particular failing of
his, you need to find another tree to bark up.
This could be a big problem for the NBA to deal with in the years to
come, but it's not going to start or end with Kobe. >> Stay informed about: Good Riddance |
