By the power vested in me, I declare the 2nd Friday in July to be
Great Sports Desert day.

I'll drink to that. Some argue every day is Great Sports Desert day.
I'll drink to that too. And again tomorrow. Rinse, lather, repeat.

We're into the US hard-court season finally <sigh>:

In other news, an American man, Joey Chestnut, brought home the Nathan's
July 4th hot-dog eating and most celebrated IFOCE championship in New
York after years of being owned by a Japanese human python named Takeru
Kobayashi, and a new world record to boot, 66 hot-dogs and buns in 12
minutes:

There seems to have been some question about Kobayashi's jaw health going
in, but he topped his own personal and the previous world record as well
at 63.

105-pound American woman Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas regrettably could
only place fifth with 39.

Finally, I thought I saw some college basketball listed on one of the
sports channels last week or the week before, looking vaguely like an
ACC-PAC multi-game matchup.

What was the deal with that? reruns?
