The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that rookie F Viktor Khryapa is
out for the 2004-05 season after suffering an injury at the Rocky Mountain
Revue earlier this month. The 22-year-old underwent successful foot surgery
on Wednesday to repair the injured Lisfranc complex in his left mid-foot.
The injury was sustained in a summer league game on July 16th went an
opponent stepped on Khryapa’s foot.
I wonder if this makes Darius's re-signing even more important now that they
are down 1 SF who probably would've gotten more minutes than we know. Sounds
like Lisfranc complex can be career threatening, or at least, career
changing.

Yeah that only leaves Miles, SAR, Patterson, Woods and Outlaw and DA.... ;-)
Miles will be around. At least one year.
About the only one left with cap room even for an offer is Atlanta.
Likely they wait until he quits shopping and then sign him to a reasonable
offer. If not he plays for the Qualifing offer on a 1 year.

Hope it is OK. He was lucky he was signed first and as a 1st round pick gets
a 3 year guaranteed contract.

No big deal. I mean it's not like the Blazers would have made the
playoffs with him any way. >> Stay informed about: Holy Khryapa bat-man! Blazer (bad) news!! |

Charlotte, too, but they appear to have absolutely no interest
in any of the guards or SFs out on the market.

Probably most likely. He was picked high, he's not going to

LOL. Sounds like I'm running for office.
BTW, Laurel, didn't I see you write once that you volunteered
for Wayne Morse? I heard a funny anecdote about him the other
day.

I think that might be one of the problems. Stromile's is
something like $6. I can't imagine those guys signing
deals for much more than that, and it seems like the
days of taking longer deals for significantly less money
a la Scottie Pippen's first Bulls' extension are gone.
Or at least I don't see it anymore. >> Stay informed about: Holy Khryapa bat-man! Blazer (bad) news!! |

On the other hand there is the risk of playing a year for a guaranteed 5 mil
with the chance of a career ending injury or not getting any more the next
summer anyway with the lockout looming, or be guaranteed 20 million for 4
years. Miles is only 22.

Condolences, guys - that's a tough (and seemingly freak) break. Sonics fans
know at least a little bit what that's like after the Collison situation
last year. Hopefully Khryapa's career won't suffer.
The plan is still that Monya is going to play the year in Europe, right?
Will Ha be playing overseas as well?

Yes. They only bought out one of the contracts, and now they are stuck with
it and keeping Khrapa on the roster.

I assume he will be in camp but to keep his rights they would have to sign
him and park him on the IR since he is a second rounder..

Ouch - that's a tough blow. But as you say elsewhere, it's not as if the
Blazers are short on small forwards, even in the unlikely scenario that
Miles walkes.
How is Telfair taking his sudden drop to third on the point guard depth
chart, behind two guys who both really love to start? It might be best for
him in the long run to see how those two operate, as long as he (and Reebok)
are patient.

How'd he do in summer league? I'm curious as to whether he's as physically
impressive but as short on game skills as the scouting reports say. I was
screaming for the Sonics to nab him in the second round - seems like a
low-risk, high-reward possibility.

Check that, they should be able to keep his rights another year if he plays
elsewhere.

I did not hear much except 'not NBA ready". Nash was talking 3 or 4 years...
I got the impression they were more 'impressed' with Sinanovic from last
year's draft, who still sounds like the Russian Shawn Bradley from the
reports...

Which, along with the Celtics/Mihm and Grizzlies/Swift situations, appears
to be the smart way to go this off-season. Not only do the Blazers get to
match, but the fact that they have said they will puts a chilling effect on
the offers he will receive. What do you think, Laurel - is Miles likely to
take the tender, get an offer from another team, or just take his lumps and
re-up with the Blazers?
