CBS Radio has cancelled him, effective immediately.

They pulled Imus right in the middle of his charity radiothon - so
that others will have to finish it. The symbolism of this - the
charity will most likely suffer, so that blacks can "reclaim their
dignity"?? What's wrong with this picture?

Wow, this will have much much larger implications than just Imus. CBS
radio essentially ruled that race will no longer be discussed on radio any
longer, at least by white people.

it's not just the race comment...it was the ho comment.

There are a lot of factors that make this case a little different from
your "typical" racially/gender insensitive remarks by personalities:

1) they weren't public figures
2) even though they weren't public figures, they were still *singled
out*

If imus refers to a group of random women he saw at the grocery store
yesterday as hos, then it's a little different because nobody really
knows who he is talking about. they don't have names or faces to the
audience. So it's different in that respect......

I can't remember a remark that insensitive directed towards people who
weren't celebrities/stars and were a specific group of people that can
be identified.

who were the specific people? to my knowledge thats just a generic
term to describe jewish people living in NYC. There are hundreds of
thousands(more than a million?) of those......the rutgers womens
basketball team has 5 starters and maybe 11 or so people total.

Referring to a group of a million or so people isn't as specific as
referring to a group of 5 or 10 or whatever.

If imus had said "female athletes are nappy haired hos" there would
have been a controversy, but I think it may not have been as bad as
what he said because the former case is more general.

not even close because the specific individual involved was given a
compliment in that he was athletic. Now you might argue that people
of both races may have been offended and take it as criticism, but in
no way was the specific individual(s) named criticized.

Also the starting qb of the cowboys is much more a public figure.

I don't really have an opinion on that.....but people can certainly
complain if they feel that another person was criticized unfairly.
There is nothing against that.

This certainly qualifies for one of the stupidest rationalizations of
racism in the 21st century. Congratulations. As long as your racism
(or perceived racism) is directed at more than a threshold number of
people, apparently around 12, then it's forgiveable. Any less than
that and you're toast.

The proof of the stupidity of your argument is this -- Imus would've
also been fired if he jokingly referred to all black female basketball
players as nappy headed ho's. See, nobody specific referred to
there.

Ridiculous. Stereotyping and insulting ALL members of an ethnic group
is worse than doing the same to just some. In the latter case,
there's a greater probability of there being some truth to it.

well to a point yeah. It depends on how severe the commentary is of
course.

If you say "I don't think women's softball players are attractive in
general" thats one thing. If you say "the third baseman for Arkansas
is really not attractive" that's going to be another thing.

I dont know thats "proof" since we don't know if that's the case.

In fact I think he may have been able to hold onto at least the radio
thing. A lot of the coverage I've heard is about how rutgers has a
valedictorian, a girl going to law school next year, a good musician,
etc....we've heard about the meeting thats taking place(i guess now)
with the team. We've heard from vivian stringer and such. All that
adds to the personalization of it all.

The only group irvin could have possibly offended in that statement
was white people *in general* in the sense that he believes they can't
be athletic. Even so, that's a shot at an entire group of people and
not specific people. The specific person was actually complemented.

That's the distinction I made earlier in the difference between
insulting a few hundred million people in general(irvin) and insulting
5-10 people.

And of course calling someone "unathletic" is a lot less harsh a slam
than calling someone a ho.

gosh no, the level of severity of the comment comes into play today.
While calling someone a ho is certainly offensive to many, what you
said is a lot worse.

But to make the appropriate comparison with your example, if you were
a public figure and said "the women on the rutgers basketball team are
stupid ******** who should be my slaves", yes that would probably be
worse because it would make it more personal. Obviously with such an
extreme statement from a public figure though it's game over anyways
and the outrage would be skyhigh, but making it personal would be even
worse(if possible)

I had a dream that I was in my favorite BBQ joint and sitting next to me was
Jesse Jackson and across from me was Al Sharpton. Al began choking on a rib
bone he tried to inhale and Jesse stood up and tried to administer the
hinneylick maneuver. As Jesse was kissing Al's ass, Al cut loose with a
power fart, which Jesse inhaled and his big head exploded. Al finally
turned purple or whatever color black people turn when they are choking to
death and fell to the ground and died right in front of me....

I took a sip of my iced tea and grabbed Al's chicken leg and Jesse's
rack-o-ribs and cheeze grits, and finished my meal in peace and quiet. I
came to the conclusion these dood will do and say anything to get attention,
but, they didn't figure on a MoParMan to just let them die....

They figured wrong....
