Why not? These weren't random people on the street. They were NCAA
athletes playing in a championship game with plenty of press coverage.
Are the men playing NCAA basketball public figures?

So? It was a joke. If they wanted an appology, they should have called
Imus or his company and asked for one. But they called a press conference.
Rutgers wanted press not an appology. >> Stay informed about: Imus: Cancelled |

similarly, the director of student housing at Kenesaw state university
isn't a public figure, but if someone high profile makes a very
insulting comment about them, I bet it's easy to look them up on the
net through their webpage and maybe even get a short bio with a pic.

heh.....99% of the population(and probably 95% of sports fans)
couldn't have named 1 player on their team. Womens college basketball
has zero juice......the only "public figures" in women's college
basketball are some of the high profile coaches and maybe one or two
players every few years.........women's college basketball players
arent anymore public figures than womens softball players.

There's a legal standard for public figures which applies to things like
their right to privacy and so forth. I don't know what it is, but it
exists. Someone doesn't become a public figure in the legal sense until
they're a lot better known than a women's basketball team.

We shouldn't confuse "public figure" with "celebrity". While a celebrity
is a public figure, the reverse isn't true.
http://www.expertlaw.com/library/personal_injury/defamation.html#3
"A person can also become a "limited public figure" by engaging in actions
which generate publicity within a narrow area of interest."
It could be argued that anyone playing a sport on TV could be considered a
"public figure". Rutgers holding that press conference and their
appearance on Oprah sure erased any doubt that they are public figures.
Did these women diserve what they were originally called? No. But Rutgers
University shares a very large portion of the credit/blame for what this
incident has done to these women, whatever that may be. >> Stay informed about: Imus: Cancelled |

Exactly what about calling people "nappy headed ho's" is discussion?

Nothing. But the reprocusisons of this incident is that radio execs will
be so afraid of anything being racially charged that it wont just be the "N
word" that's taboo, it will be any mention of race whatsoever. >> Stay informed about: Imus: Cancelled |

Yet just this morning I heard a perfectly normal discussion about race
on NPR.

That's a bit harsh, but not wholly untrue.
As one black woman commentator said this
morning, when she was growing up her mother taught
her to ignore cheap backhanded taunts, and she
added that the notion that one old man ruined an
entire basketball season with one stupid thoughtless
joke was just so much poppycock. Embracing
victimhood like this weakens black women rather
than empower them.
Imus apologized profusely and admitted his remark
was idiotic. He even pledged (and you know this
would have been closely monitored) to rechannel
his program in a new direction. That should have
been the end of it. Instead, this "this ruined
our lives" bullcrap.
The Duke kids who got falsely accused of
a crime with horrific stigma like rape, and who had
their lives disrupted and torn asunder, and who
had to spend months and months and thousands of
dollars in an uphill battle for exhoneration, had
their lives ruined. A bunch of women who got
"dissed" by an offhand idiotic joke did not get their
lives "ruined." The incident was indeed unfortunate,
but let's get some perspective here.

This whole preoccupation of indignation over
getting "dissed" has gone way too far. That is
the first reaction of so many black people, regardless
if they are being "dissed" by a white person or
a fellow black person (in which case they often
respond, very violently). I've seen Texan white
males do the same thing, where the least little
insult is "fighting words."
We see the same thing with Muslims killing
people because they were "dissed," even by
something as innocuous as a cartoon.
Now we're starting to see young groups of
militant Christians, who want to "fight" for their
religion. There was a big article on it I just read
this morning in a magazine (I'll try to dig up
a reference if anyone is interested).
