JAX: JERMAINE WANTS KNICKS

By MARC BERMAN

May 15, 2007 -- One of Jermaine O'Neal's buddies confirmed the Pacers'
big man wants to be shipped to the Knicks to play for Isiah Thomas.

Warriors guard Stephen Jackson said O'Neal is angry at the midseason
trade that sent Jackson and Al Harrington to Golden State. Jackson
added if the Knicks did get him, they would be dangerous.

"If it does happen, look out East," Jackson said. "He and [Eddy] Curry
in the paint are going to be a monster."

Thomas, who is looking to add one more star to the Knicks roster this
summer, has often taken credit for turning O'Neal into an All-Star
when he coached the Pacers.

"I don't think he has any patience [left]," Jackson said on Yahoo.com.
"He wants to get out of there because all of the guys they brought in
to build the team around are gone now."

Pacers president Donnie Walsh disputed a report last week O'Neal asked
for a trade to the Knicks. "He was saying if he did get traded, he
would want to go to those two teams [Knicks and Lakers]," Jackson
said. "[Isiah] and Jermaine are good friends."

So who has better parts to make a trade, the Knicks or Lakers? What can the
Lakers deal, Smush Parker?

Depends on whether they're wiling to move Bynum to get him. They
actually might now since Kobe sounds like he's getting restless. It's
still speculation really... or Jermaine using the big squads to try
and force the issue as has been seen many times before.

BTW: When I first saw this thread title I thought it was about
Jermaine Jackson - throw in from the Curry deal and former member of
the Jackson 5.

Lakers could offer Lamar Odom (with two years remaining), Andrew
Bynum, and a first rounder or two and the salaries would come pretty
close to matching up. Not a bad deal.

Much more attractive for the Pacers than overpaying Crawford until
2011 and matching salaries with further garbage, even if they got
David Lee and Channing Frye too. Plus they don't want to send J.
O'Neal to a conference "rival", and Bird doesn't want to do business
with Isiah. Doing business with Dr. Buss instead avoids both of
those.

Of course, if they could be lured into Curry we'd be in good shape,
but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Walsh has a history of
being pretty smart, maybe until this year's "character" trade
reminiscent of the blowing up of the Jail Blazers that Portland never
recovered from.

Anyway, there's another 28 teams out there, most of whom will probably
be calling Donnie Walsh as soon as they're allowed to make trades. I
wouldn't expect Jermaine O'Neal to go to either NYK or LAL. Just
because a player demanding/requesting a trade asks for a certain team
doesn't mean that ownership is going to look away from a better deal
to honor that player's request. Walsh will take the best deal on the
table, regardless of what O'Neal says. O'Neal is the one flying the
coop -- Walsh has no responsibility to be nice to him. This is, after
all, the man who sent Al Harrington packing to the Atlanta Hawks when
the latter felt he should be a starter. (He got his wish).

Problem is the Knicks lack the goods that the Pacers would want.

Maybe another Chicago-esque unconditional first round draft picks?
Trade 2008 first round pick (no protection), Pacers has a right to
swap 2009 first round pick (no protection) and trade 2010 first round
pick (no protection) + Eddie Curry + Channing Frye (yes, I'm that low
on him.)

Yeah, I was going to write we should sign Tito instead because he had better
hops.

The Knicks play defense like Michael Jackson, but Jacko rebounds better than
Curry....

Heh, so did I. But I'm glad to see that Stephen Jackson is now a trusted
source on something other than giving a breakdown of the definition of
"assault" in various jurisdication.

I think O'Neal is more versatile and consistent than Odom, but
otherwise I agree with you. I doubt LA is interested and Odom's
really the only non-Kobe piece they have that can match salary.

None of that is going to be Indiana's problem. They won't care. The
risk falls upon the team trading for him and there are plenty of teams
willing to take that risk.

> This happened a long time ago when the Pistons traded Dantly for
> Aguire. I also think the Pacers would be nuts to pass on Lee and Crawford.

Even if your trade was possible (it's not; the Pacers would have to
take an additional $6M or so in salary to make the numbers match up,
which means they'd probably have to take one of Isiah's MLE gems like
Jeffries or James in such a deal) are you joking? The Pacers would be
nuts to pass up David Lee and Jamal Crawford for Jermaine O'Neal?

> Crawford would be much better on the Pacers than the Knicks due to the make
> up of that team,

Crawford's a career loser (I think a recent article noted him as the
player who's currently been in the league the longest without ever
going to the playoffs) signed to a terrible contract, and the Pacers
already have a streaky jump shooter (Mike Dunleavy). Why on earth
would they give up their best player for him?

> player and Lee is going to be a top F in the league eventually. Guys who can
> rebound like him have a lot of value.

Guys like O'Neal who *already are* top Fs in the league have a hell of
a lot more.

And we don't even need to bother mentioning that Lee just spent half
his second season unable to recover from injury.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but just because you want it so doesn't
make it so. A hot and cold, defensively challenged jump shooter on a
bad contract and a pretty good forward with potential and questionably
prone to injury -- plus another $6M player -- is not going to get you
one of the top big men in the league unless the other GM is desperate,
stupid or both.

And you continue to ignore that there's no way in hell Larry Bird is
going to do business with Isiah Thomas unless he really feels he's
taking Isiah to the cleaners. A lopsided trade with the Pacers in the
Knicks' favor
is just not really going to happen.

Yeah, not bad at all for Indiana. Horrible deal for LA. LA is probably not
going to be much better than they are now after that deal so those #1's
could have some value let alone Odom for O'Neal is pretty close talent wise.

In all practicality, your take on this makes sense, except if O'Neal wants
to be traded to a particular and they don't trade him there, I don't think
the other team is going to get a positive attitude and O'Neal might not even
report. This happened a long time ago when the Pistons traded Dantly for
Aguire. I also think the Pacers would be nuts to pass on Lee and Crawford.
Crawford would be much better on the Pacers than the Knicks due to the make
up of that team, but that make up could change with the loss of their star
player and Lee is going to be a top F in the league eventually. Guys who can
rebound like him have a lot of value. He is also going to be very
marketable.

I have come to agree with the Capt. that Thomas has too much invested in
Curry to trade him. It will be Lee and Frye.

Odom has an unfortunate habit of disappearing and watching Kobe for
whole... games... weeks... at a time. And despite the differences in
their game (which are huge), Odom and Walton pretty much fill the same
role, albeit Odom is much, much better. Ideally I'm sure they'd like to
keep both of them as Odom would make an ideal 4 to O'Neal's 5 but if
that's what it'll take, the cupboard certainly wouldn't be bare. If they
can find another G, which they seem determined to do, they could even
come out of it with a better balanced team. They certainly have no one
in the pivot now to make the triangle work.

The last guy that bitched about being with the Lakers against his will
was Doug Christie. I can't think of another.

And the Pacers already have a developing prospect at the 4 in Diogu.
Neither Lee nor Diogu are moving to C, and they have Granger at SF.
