The Denver Nuggets swarmed Kobe Bryant from the beginning Tuesday night with
double-team traps, forcing him to pass and giving Bryant's teammates prime
offensive opportunities. On Wednesday night, the Utah Jazz played it
straight - not going out of its way to flock toward Bryant until he made a
clear move to score.
The Lakers weren't able to make the quick adjustment to a different style of
play. It didn't help that Coach Rudy Tomjanovich had canceled shootaround
Tuesday morning in favor of rest.
On the Bryant-based pick-and-rolls that befuddled Denver, Utah's big man
would show and release. Bryant didn't have a quick trigger with his shot
until the third quarter, and the Lakers' offense looked mostly stagnant.
Tomjanovich did send Bryant to the post to operate, but Utah timed its help
defense well on those plays, with Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko the main
shot blocker.
After the victory over Denver, Bryant said of the double-teams he faced and
beat by passing: "If teams continue to decide to do that, we'll continue to
try to cut 'em up. If they go toanother type of defensive scheme, we'll
practice and we'll work on cutting 'em up in that way, too."
