When a Major League Baseball player threw a chair at a heckling fan or an
NHL player was sent to prison for plotting to kill his agent, O'Neal said
the reaction was more subdued and the criticism was limited to the
individuals.

"These are people that are not black," O'Neal said. "That cuts me a little
bit because it is totally unfair for this league to be damaged by what
happened [in Detroit]."

O'Neal, 26, said he doesn't understand why there is talk about an age limit
for NBA rookies when athletes in baseball, hockey and golf, among other
sports, routinely turn professional as teenagers with no public fuss. He
wonders why critics say high school players are hurting the league when some
of them are among the best and most popular players.

"I don't know what it is, but as a black athlete that came out of high
school, I feel like it is because we are black," O'Neal said.

"I am not a killer," said O'Neal, a three-time All-Star. "I am not a beastly
guy. It was just a bad situation that happened. Everybody goes through
situations where you say, `Man, I wish that hadn't happened.'

"But does that make you a bad person?"

I'm absolutely sure that there's an age limit in hockey, at least.

No, it's because fighting with fans is sure to doom the sport.

Any good person can do bad things, and vice versa. However, no one was ever
suspended for being a bad person.

There is (or was) in baseball as well, though it only effectively
applies to foreign players. They can't (or at least couldn't) play
until the equivalent of their high school class would have graduated.

This is only an issue because of something that the NBA players'
association is opposed to, which is the existence of formal
minor league affiliates in baseball. The players' association
says that this would allow teams to "stockpile" younger players,
essentially keeping them on the farm until their careers are over
just to keep other teams from getting them.

Yeah, no other sport has that problem, but the players' association
long ago gave up the pretense of caring about the vast majority of
their members who would be effected (and benefit) from a formal
minor league affiliate system in the NBA.

No, but most good people would reflect and say "That was a bad situation
that I was a part of" or "Man, I wish that I hadn't done that."

These third person non apologies drive me crazy.

I think O'Neal's point--and it's a fair one--is this. When white
players or fans do bad things, like baseball or hockey players going
into the stands, or baseball fans rushing onto the field to attack a
first base coach, or soccer hooligans do what they do, etc., we rightly
blame the people involved BUT we don't hear black radio and TV
personalities blaming these acts on "white culture," the music whites
listen to, etc. On the other hand, we did have to listen to the Rush
Limbaughs of the world and others blame "black culture," rap music,
etc. for the actions of many of the folks involved in the Palace
fights. Not *every* commentator did that, but quite a few did. That's
a double standard, and to that extent, racist.

Now, let's get back to watching some games and remember the message of
nonviolence and loving your brother of Martin Luther King, Jr. And
it's pretty nice to have the day game be defending champs Pistons
against best record in the NBA Suns.--Joe

I wouldn't be using Rush Limbaugh as your crutch for calling racism by the
masses. He doesn't represent anyone but idiots, and a small % of the
country.

I would like to think that you're right about Rush's appeal, but I fear
that you underestimate the number of his followers. And while I don't
know what you mean by "crutch," I do know that it wasn't just Rush
blaming "black culture."--Joe

I think Rush's "audience" has dwindled a lot. No one seems to pay attention
to him anymore.

And by 'crutch', I mean, if you have to point out it being racist (the
coverage, etc) based on Rush Limbaugh...well, using Rush as a reference
point of something bad isn't exactly hard.

That'd be like saying how horrible the media is in relation to the tsunami
based on what Michael Savage said.

Again, I would love to think that you're right, but what do you base
that on?

Again, it wasn't just Rush that was blaming "black culture."

I almost hesitate to ask, but now you've got me curious: what did he
say?--Joe

he doesn't have a TV show, and basically no one cares about him anymore.
Radio's pull is not as powerful as it once was. And most of Rush's "fans"
probably don't follow the NBA very much.

most of the people who "blamed" black culture, were not speaking for the
majority of people, or rationale people. Who exactly was blaming black
culture anyway?

Usually ignorant fools who don't have much say in the world.

he basically said we shouldn't be sending $ to the tsunami victims. BUT,
Savage is just an act, who says things to get attention, and in the end,
more $$ for his pocket. He speaks to an ignorant, xenophobic and homophobic
fan-base (the core of his audience I mean) and the fringe just listen
because outside of his out-landish statements, they somewhat agree (to a
smaller degree) with what he says.

Using that logic must mean John Kerry's wife is Black because she was

Probably not an idiot, but an employee of a company that is owned by General
Electrics. GE is one of the most prominent and long lasting providers
(contractors?) for the American army, so no wonder why they try to push the
conservative agenda.
