The Jazz offered Greg Ostertag $2.3 million a year to continue his NBA
career in Utah.
It wasn't enough.
Ostertag, the Jazz's enigmatic center for the last nine years, announced
Tuesday that he plans to sign a free-agent contract with Sacramento.
Ostertag's new deal will be worth $4 million next season, league sources
said. He will also own an option on returning to the Kings in 2005-06.
"I'm pumped," Ostertag said at an impromptu press conference at
impromptu press conference at Thanksgiving Point, where he talked to the
media after participating in a benefit golf tournament.
"It's going to be difficult, leaving. I'll probably have a tear when we
roll out of Utah. But I'm excited. . . . You've got to put Sacramento in the
top three teams in the West."

We wish Greg the best," O'Connor said. "There just wasn't a whole lot else
we could do."
Said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan: "We hate to see Greg go. We're going to
miss him. But we had a decision to make and money was a factor."

"I didn't meet everybody's expectations," Ostertag said. "But I think I had
more good games than bad games. . . . The bad ones just stand out a little
more."

So, the Kings let Vlade go to save 1million ? That sucks, that really sucks
that the Maloofs would do that. I hate seeing Vlade go, but I also hate
seeing that underacheiver Osterfag come to the Kings instead. I'm losing my
interest in the Kings. They should have shipped Webbers ass off instead. The
Golden State Warriors are looking better everyday.

Can anyone shed some light on why Sacramento would let Vlade walk and not
offer him more that 2.5 million and then hire Ostertag for 4 million...

Last season some locker room problems surfaced. Despite the reputation of
Vlade as a team leader, there was tension between factions, supposed one
comprised of Webber and Bibby, and the other Vlade and Peja.

Also the team may think that Vlade actually impedes the progress of Peja.
That Peja is becoming too comfortable with Vlade as his big brother.
Without Vlade now Peja will have to stand on his own.

Besides, Vlade is 36.

Uh, Ostertag's bigger (3 inches, 40 lbs), younger (5 years), and (possibly)
better (for the Kings). I think that Greg should be a nice fit for the Kings,
who don't need scoring from the "5", only rebounding and defense.

I don't know if Greg smokes - but I will opine that the Kings lose quite a
bit in the locker room intangibles category.

Ostertag has a pretty poor reputation, didn't get along with Karl, etc., but
I don't think he's a hopeless case - the change of scenery may be just the
ticket.

I never thought Brad Miller was a pansy, maybe a little undersized at
center (in the West at least). Sure, Brad also spent just over half his
time last year at PF, but I gotta figure he's the nominal starting "5" now
with the return of CWebb.

Pretty bizarre. What the heck were the
Queens thinking?

i suspect it had more to do with a power struggle of sorts between
vlade and webber and not really the money.

You poor `ol Laker fans - Kupchak got bamboozled yet again.

IMO, the Kings unloaded their baggage, got an effective upgrade on the cheap,
and don't even mind letting Vlade go to a team in their Division. Worse,
you'll probably be forced to endure the Kings whomping the Lakers (if not the
Conference) this season.

<grin> But hey, you may be onto something...CWebb may indeed hold a Kobe-like
sway over the Maloof Bros. Why else did he play so much last year, when
he played so poorly?

I doubt Osterfag will bring the floor leadership
and passing talent that Vlade did. The Queens' offense
used to bog down without Vlade in there.

Exactly.
Most of the hardcore Kings fans are.
They booed Webber until he started thinking about being traded.
And they will do the same for anyone who plays for them.

What a classless fan base that the team retired a jersey in their
"honor", really.

Any moron who thinks Osterfag is an upgrade over Vlade
is....well....a moron.
