Rumor has it that Bill Lambeer is sniffing around the NBA and his name is
getting tossed out as a potential coach at some point. His NBA bonafides make
him an option certainly. While this would be a disaster for the Shock, it might
be good for women's basketball. Right now the feeling seems to be that it's a
one-way street and that once someone coaches women they can never coach men. If
Lambeer crossed back over and had the success with men that he had with women,
it would bring new credibility to the WNBA, IMHO.

Ron Rothstein is currently on the Indiana Pacers coaching staff. Michael
Cooper was an assistant coach for the Lakers in the mid-90's before joining
the Sparks coaching staff and has had his name mentioned for jobs in the NBA
and at New Mexico State in the last year. Richie Adubato was an NBA coach
for 19 years before coaching the N.Y. Liberty. There were others. There is
definitely a surplus of coaches with NBA level experience or coaches
qualified and capable of coaching in the NBA. Some get jobs in the WNBA.
I don't see any problem for a male coach to go to the WNBA from the NBA.

For women coaches, I think it is an entirely different matter. No WNBA team
coached by a woman has yet to win a WNBA Championship. Cheryl Miller came
within an overtime of winning one back in 1998. That was the closest. More
and more WNBA head coaching jobs are being taken by NBA guys. Dee Brown is
the latest. The Indiana Fever head coaching job will probably go to another
NBA guy. It's getting tougher for a woman to get a coaching job in the WNBA
now. Only four head coaches in the WNBA are women, at last count.

There is absolutely no problem going from the NBA to the wnba. The problem
has been going the other way - I get the impression that many consider a WNBA
the kiss of death when it comes to getting back to the NBA. Ron Rothstein is
the only person I can think of who did that.

Frank Layden is back in the NBA as a consultant for the Knicks (although I
don't know how much that counts, since his son is the GM there). TR Dunn, as
bad as he was as coach of the Sting, is currently an assistant with the
Nuggets. And Dee Brown went back to working in the Orlando Magic's front
office after the Miracle relocated to Connecticut, until he took the Silver
Stars' head coaching job two weeks ago. To be honest, I don't see any
'blacklist' on ex-WNBA head coaches at all.

Went back to the NBA:
T.R. Dunn
Ron Rothstein
Frank Layden
Dee Brown (went back, then voluntarily left again)

Did not go back to the NBA:
Orlando Woolridge (hasn't been heard from since his marijuana arrest two years
ago)
Darrell Walker (most recently seen in September, using a pair of clubs to
attack a golfer who dared to ask to play through on him)
Sonny Allen (old geezer who only scouted in the NBA, never coached, and is
voluntarily retired now, but he's not NBA coaching material anyway--can you
picture A.I. doing 'the weave'?)

Were never in the NBA to begin with (have strictly been women's coaches):
Brian Agler
Fred Williams
Greg Williams
Tom Maher
every woman who has ever coached in the league

So really, that's only six former coaches who ever *were* part of the NBA and
were young enough to come back to it after their WNBA stint, and four of the
six actually *have* come back in some capacity.

That's good to know. I know I've heard that "coach so and so would never take a
WNBA job because it would prevent him from going back to the NBA" but there is
obviously no merit to the assertion.

I am sure that someone who was ONLY WNBA - such as Van Chancellor - would have
a very difficult time cracking the boy's league.

I've got my fingers crossed that nobody every, even for a second considers
Isiah Thomas for the Fever position.

Don't worry because Isiah Thomas would not take that position. He's a
NBA coach & NBA legend, and he'll soon be with an NBA team. This will
add plenty of fuel to Isiah's distractors fire, until he silences them
( and he will) by making whatever team he takes over a winner.

No disrespect for your obvious admiration for Isiah Thomas but I have never
been a big fan of his. In my opinion, he was one of the most *overated*
guards in the history of the NBA. Waiting for him to turn around an NBA or
WNBA team as a coach and make it a winner is like "waiting for Godot".

Replace *overated* with *underated* and you're on to something. Or
you could just explain exactly how Zeke was overated??????
