Post subject: Lebron from a sober perspective

We are all caught up in the rapture of Lebron euphoria but the Michael
Jordan comparisons are misguided. Lebron is not a Michael Jordan
descendant in terms of aesthetics or style. Lebron's greatness is
undeniable but his flair for the spectacular is not part of the Dr J -
Air Jordan - Kobe Bryant lineage. In order to join that exclusive club
a superstar has to display more than the technical virtuosity of a
complete player, but must be blessed with a lean, acrobatic body
combined with the flexible, tensile strength of a steel cable. A true
basketball messiah is sublimely beautiful in motion. He elevates with
effortless grace, hovers above the defense, glides, twirls and fluidly
creates impossible gravity defying shots while suspended in mid air.
That is not Lebron's style because his muscular body type is better
suited to a speed & power game. Basketball fans will have to wait a
few more years for the next Jordan or Kobe. In the meantime, let's all
sit back and enjoy Lebron for what he is...the Magic Johnson of our
time.

I have no idea why Kobe is in this discussion.

Dr. J and Jordan are the very most elite of their time.LeBron is certainly
capable. Kobe is a step up from Vince Carter or AI but isn't in the same
league as Jordan or Erving. No MVP's, no Shaqless rings, and now easy
pickings in the playoffs on "his team."

Erving - Jordan - Kobe are the Holy Trinity of Basketball.

This not about the minutiae of statistical comparisons. This not some
geeky argument about whether Karl Malone was better than Barkley. Nash
better than Stockton or Bird better Olajuwon. This is about Beauty in
a style of play that even a non basketball fan can easily recognize.
It's a recognition of the three men who best manifested an extremely
high level of technical brilliance, proficiency & precision blended
with the sublime music of improvisational street basketball.

By the way...a very good case could be made for including Allen
Iverson in that elite group.

Good point about Connie Hawkins. The Hawk, much like Vince Carter,
displayed his brilliance too inconsistently. A better nominee might be
Elgin Baylor.

Connie Hawkins, Erving, Jordan, but not Kobe. Kobe isn't even as flashy as
Vince Carter. I would love to see Kobe dunk completely over a 7'2" center
(like the French one that Carter dunked on).

Does *any* so called superstar have a ring with no Pippen/Shaq?

He's changed his Pippen, it's true. That's somewhat rare. Only a
few superstars have won championships with completely different
teams. Let's see... only Shaq, Bill Russell, Wilt and Duncan.
Anybody else I forgot?

Holding down the bench on more than one championship team is
pretty cool, and a lot of good guys have done it. But I'm more
interested in the star players who had to do the heavy lifting
with 11 new guys and still won another championship.
