tied a WNBA record by hitting 27 of 27 free throws in a game against the
Phoenix Mercury today. Sparks won 82-65. Lisa Leslie is still out. She
has missed 5 games now.

Rookie guard Shaquala Williams has been a pleasant surprise filling in for
the injuried Tamecka Dixon.

Sparks are 3-2 since LL was put on injured reserve. All games were at home.

....turn to bite the bullet. When it rains it POURS! The Sparks have more
players on injured reserve, in the hospital, on crutches, or recovering from
surgery than they have on the active roster.

Wanted: Center for the Los Angeles Sparks basketball team. Experienced
basketball player preferred but not necessary. Should be 6'3" or over. Must
be female. Inquire at Los Angeles Sparks headquarters in Inglewood, CA.
Needed immediately for road trip to Seattle, Phoenix, San Antonio,
Minnesota, and Houston.

Sparks place Milton on injured list

August 5, 2003
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Sparks All-Star forward DeLisha Milton
joined teammate Lisa Leslie on the injured list Tuesday.

Milton's injured ankle will keep her out of the two-time WNBA champion's
lineup for a minimum of three games.

Leslie, the league's all-time leading scorer, hasn't played since injuring
her right knee in the All-Star game July 12. The Sparks said Tuesday that
Leslie will remain sidelined at least through Saturday's game at San
Antonio.

The Sparks also played without All-Star guard Tamecka Dixon for four games
last month after she strained her left knee.

The Sparks are 3-5 during Leslie's absence, falling to 18-8 overall and
behind Detroit (18-6) in the race for the league's best record and homecourt
advantage throughout the playoffs.

Los Angeles' lead in the Western Conference is only two games over Houston
(15-9) and three over Minnesota (15-11).

Center Jenny Mowe was signed Tuesday to a seven-day contract. The 6-foot-5
Mowe played 10 games for the now-defunct Portland Fire in 2001 and 2002 and
was waived by the Washington Mystics before the start of the 2003 season.

Jenny Mowe and Vanessa Nygaard for Milton and Leslie. Hey, that lottery pick
looks a lot more realistic.

I also don't think Milton is safe. A bundled trade, possibly with Stiles,
looks more realistic every day. A few years ago, they tried to unload her with
Figgs to get Lauren Jackson.

I though Milton was Leslie's security blanket. If so she'll be secure.
She isn't having a very good year, that's for sure and they really need her
right now.

Jenny Mowe lasted one game with the Sparks. She's already been cut.

Come on, the Sparks will make the Playoffs. I just hope they don't get
Houston or Sacramento in the first round.
Minnesota or even Seattle wouldn't be bad.

The Sparks would be very foolish to trade Milton. I still think they were
foolish to trade Figgs.

Lauren Jackson and Lisa Leslie both on the same team? Not good for the
league.

I wish I shared your optimism. The Sparks are playing terrible team ball and
the revolving door of players isn't helping them. I don't think they'll make
it. If they lose to Phoenix tonight, any optimism will be depleted.

Teasley for Figgs turned out to be a terrific trade. On the other hand, Mapp
for Feaster was bad, IMO. But I stand by my impression that Milton won't be a
Spark next season. They do have to start rebuilding and since they typically
waste their draft picks, their lineup is getting older and as this season
proved, one injury to Leslie and the team flounders.

Besides, I don't think they like each other very much. Remember the hair

Well, Mabika's three pointer beat the buzzer.

The Sparks have six games left and are 4 games ahead of both Sacramento and
Minnesota. Both Sacramento and Minnesota would have to finish ahead of the
Sparks to eliminate them from the playoffs. The Sparks would have to lose
all their remaining games and BOTH Sacramento and Minnesota go 5-1.
Impossible.

The oldest team in the league is the Comets. They've had their share of
injuries. However, to PARAPHRASE Sheryl Swoopes' comments after
beating the Shock, 'old age and treachery beats youth and skill
every time.' (actually she said, "we...have more experience than
Detroit. They have a lot of talent, but experience and talent can
usually beat young talent.'' )

I saw figures on the average age of the Comets vs. the Liberty, and the
Liberty are older if you don't count Cynthia Cooper, who isn't playing this
year. If you count the starting five, the Liberty are significantly older
than the Comets.

I think Cheryl has a point. I expect the Shock to be eliminated rather quickly
in the play offs as it will be all new for them. In 2-3 years - watch out.

Right now, my (hypothetical) money is on the Comets or the Storm to win it
all.

I'd have to go with the Comets. They are coming together at the right time.

Unlike my poor Fever who are falling apart. :-(

Comets

Name (age)
__________

F Swoopes (32)
F Thompson (28)
C Snow (23)
G Arcain (34)
G Figgs (26)
G Cooper (40)

Liberty
___________

F Robinson (29)
F Whitmore (26)
C Baranova (31)
G Johnson (31)
G Weatherspoon (37)
F Phillips (33)
G Hammon (26)

Other than Michelle Snow there isn't that much difference between the Comets
and the Liberty.

Take out Weatherspoon with Cooper and it's almost the same. (Not that I
want to get into an argument over statistical variations.)

Sparks
_______________

F Milton (28)
F Mabika (27)
C Leslie (31)
G Dixon (27)
G Teasley (24)
C Gillom (39)
G Witherspoon (34)
C Mapp (33)

former player:
F Byears (30)

The Sparks could be scrambled to look like an old team that should be
rebuild or a rather young team with old reserves.
I wouldn't trade away Milton given what the Sparks have.

Shock

F Enis (28)
F Feaster (27)
C Sutton-Brown (25)
G Stinson (35)
G Staley (33)
G Miller (24)

The Sting are 4-0 against the Shock this year. A much older team. Old Age
and treachery...
