So here's the chain of events:

Baron Davis opts out of big money with the Warriors.

Corey Maggette and Elton Brand opt out of big money with the Clips.

Ainge, who is clearly paying attention, makes a run at Corey Maggette
for the mid-level exception. This is nuts, since Maggette was making
like seven million and the mid-level would be a pay cut.

Baron Davis promptly reaches a verbal agreement with the Clips, which
is the necessary piece for...

Elton Brand gets ready to re-sign with the Clips, but to do that he
needs to take a pay cut (thanks to Davis' salary) and the Clips need
to forget all about...

Corey Maggette.

So OK; there's a 20 ppg scorer on the table. He could spell Allen
or Pierce as a very dangerous sixth man. He's a Dukie, so he had some
fundamentals at one point. On the other hand, his defense is a bit
suspect.

Other teams mentioned: Orlando, San Antonio. Like Boston, those two
only have the mid-level available. I mean, you'd sort of expect
Maggette to get more like 7-8 million again, right?

I dunno, I tend to think it doesn't happen. At the very least, he's
been reluctant to take the sixth man role before. I don't know that
I see Ray Allen moving to sixth man either, and Maggette's more of a
SF than an SG.

Interesting off-season, though.

*snicker*

Maggette asked the Clippers for 11 million. He's gotta know nobody
has that kind of cap space, though.

My buddy and I talked this over yesterday. My feeling is to pass on
Maggette. But in Ainge we will trust. I'd prefer Baron Davis, because he
could legitmately spell Allen and Rondo. However, the "pre-arragnemnt" with
the Clips has made that an impossibility. Plus, the C's would need a lot of
work to make him fit in the payroll.

Maggette, OTOH, has shown that he even though he went to Duke, didn't pay
attention in class. He gave himself a pay cut.

Hate to say it, but Rondo would spell Davis. (Not that Davis is coming
to Boston.) I love Rondo a lot, but I recognize that Davis gets a steady
20 ppg plus 8 assists plus 4 rebounds. The guy's really good.

Eh, I need to put down the crack pipe. It's a fantasy and nothing more.
You're right...at this stage of their careers, Baron should be starting
ahead of Rondo if they are on the same team. In fact, having a guy like
Baron around might be bad for Rondo's development and/or attitude. After
all, Rajon only smacked the Lakers around in the last game of the year.

I get the feeling there is a good chance that the C's might lose Eddie House
to free agency. He was on the books for 1.5 mil last year. I wouldn't be
surprised if he got an offer for 2.5-3 mil. I don't know that the C's could
or would match at that price for his role on the team. In that case, who do
the C's bring in?

My vote would be for Juan Dixon. He's a FA and was making 2.5 mil. I don't
know that he'll get that from anyone. He seems to be another Eddie House
type. I've liked him since his Maryland days.

I sort of agree. Davis would be interesting here, but I don't know that
we need the ego.

Hm, Dixon's not bad. I think you're right that we're losing Eddie House;
he's bounced around a lot because he's the kind of guy who is replaceable.

You know, Telfair's gonna be available. 9 ppg, 6 assists last year.

Better than Dixon at least he tries instead of whining.
