Although Bryant reiterated he was fine with the team as constructed, his
public stance Wednesday was: "I'd love to have him (Malone) back here.
Everybody would. If he wants to come back and play, the door's always open.
.... In no way was what I said directed toward him or a personal attack. If
he's felt some type of way about that, then I apologize."

Said Kupchak: "We're hopeful Kobe's comments today (Wednesday) will evoke a
different reaction (from Malone)."

Bryant told reporters he'd try to contact Malone.

Kupchak said repeatedly "it's best" to allow Malone, who is at his ranch in
Arkansas, time for his anger to subside. However, comments Malone made about
Bryant to the Riverside Press-Enterprise were sharp.

Among the things Malone said were:

On Bryant's personality: "I'll tell you what I am: I'm real. I'm a real
brother. I don't turn it on when the camera comes on."

Ironic thing for Karl to say, since he's probably the only black guy in the
league who's whiter than Kobe :)

My mom told me once: "The universe doesn't revolve around you!"
Nevertheless, I'm convinced it's a viable theory until someone
proves it wrong.
