Although Bryant reiterated he was fine with the team as constructed, his
public stance Wednesday was: "I'd love to have him (Malone) back here.
Everybody would. If he wants to come back and play, the door's always open.
.... In no way was what I said directed toward him or a personal attack. If
he's felt some type of way about that, then I apologize."
Said Kupchak: "We're hopeful Kobe's comments today (Wednesday) will evoke a
different reaction (from Malone)."
Bryant told reporters he'd try to contact Malone.
Kupchak said repeatedly "it's best" to allow Malone, who is at his ranch in
Arkansas, time for his anger to subside. However, comments Malone made about
Bryant to the Riverside Press-Enterprise were sharp.
