Dynasties, like what the Comets were and might still be, and the Sparks of the
last couple years, are not necessarily bad things. I wouldn't say that the
Yankees dominance of the World Series (over the history of Major League
Baseball) has exactly "hurt" that sport. Football goes through these phases
too, apparently without much harm. And in men's basketball, remember the
Chicago Bulls dynasty? I believe that particular run coincided with a rise in
popularity of the NBA. Dynasty teams set the standard. They create an impetus
for the rest of the teams to beat them. In college ball, Geno's and Pat's
dynasty teams have actually created most of the buzz around women's basketball
in the last 15 years.
If anything, parity would be hurtful. Dynasties create a "bad guy" to shoot
for. If a new team rises to the top every year, then the league would be
perceived as being "in a state of flux" and perhaps seen as being "soft"
because of it.
You can't win either way.
