Thought I'd go out on a limb and predict the WNBA awards this year: Pot shots
and other comments are welcome

MVP - Lisa Leslie
Defensive player of the year - Tamika Catchings
Rookie - Cheryl Ford
Coach - Bill Lambeer (unless the Shock have peaked and tank for the rest of the
season, in which case I'd go with M Cooper)
Most improved - Kristen Rassmussen
Comeback player - Elana Baronova

WNBA = LA and the others....
Does anybody know how to obtain
a redistribution of the forces between
the others WNBA teams? Or it is better
to wait for a cloning of the
Leslie's genetic material?

Could be Catchings though...

If the shock tank, then I might go with Nell Fortner, Anne Donovan (if
the Storm can hang the rest of the season in the West) or Trudy Lacey -
who expected the Sting to lose Donovan and still be right there?

or Brooke Wyckoff, now a starter with CT

Dynasties, like what the Comets were and might still be, and the Sparks of the
last couple years, are not necessarily bad things. I wouldn't say that the
Yankees dominance of the World Series (over the history of Major League
Baseball) has exactly "hurt" that sport. Football goes through these phases
too, apparently without much harm. And in men's basketball, remember the
Chicago Bulls dynasty? I believe that particular run coincided with a rise in
popularity of the NBA. Dynasty teams set the standard. They create an impetus
for the rest of the teams to beat them. In college ball, Geno's and Pat's
dynasty teams have actually created most of the buzz around women's basketball
in the last 15 years.

If anything, parity would be hurtful. Dynasties create a "bad guy" to shoot
for. If a new team rises to the top every year, then the league would be
perceived as being "in a state of flux" and perhaps seen as being "soft"
because of it.

You can't win either way.

I agree to some extent, but the problem with the Sparks is that the
city/region has not jumped on the band wagon and sold out the arena
regularly, even with 2 championships...so the folks in the region can
still get a ticket. With the Bulls, UCONN, Houston too I think, and
others part of the awe around dynasties is the untouchability... which
is not there with LA Sparks, in my opinion.

I don't think the Shock are going to tank the rest of the season. They came
out of the gate fast (much like DC did last year)
and other teams have found their measure but this team is too good to
collapse the rest of the way. Frankly, I think they are the only team to
have a realistic chance to take the WNBA title away from the Sparks.
