Payton said Monday that if O'Neal indeed is traded to the Heat he might ask
the Lakers to let him go.

"If they don't sign Karl back, then I'll probably get up out of here,"
Payton said by phone. "They're going to buy me out or trade me, or
something. If Karl don't come back, I ain't coming back."

"I mean, what team are they going to put on the floor?" Payton asked.

"Dude (O'Neal) is gone now," Payton said. "That's why I came out here. He
left. He did that to us. I really ain't tripping off of that. But it ain't
going to be like last year when I can't play basketball. It's going to be a
lot different."

It is amazing to me how much my opinion of Payton has dropped since he
became a Laker. And I am not only talking about his defensive skills or lack
of. This guy is a constant whinefest and should be traded ASAP. If I have to
put up with another season watching his pouting face and listening to his
incessant bitching...

The upside is that he still has some pretty good trade value.

Dood he did the same thing for a decade in Seattle. We just shrugged our
shoulders and assumed that Gary was just being Gary. He is one of the most
unprofessional hard working players of all time.

To whom? He's washed up as a player and too big a prick to tutor a younger
PG.

To teams that want a PG on a mid-level ending contract.

He must figure Kobe will be playing for a Colorado prison team or will be a
Slipper.

Exactly. Who can blame him? (A) Who knows if His Egoness will be there next
year due to Eagle, CO issues or in fact go to the Clippers (b) Payton knows
Shaq was the one who was the most responsible for the 3 rings Payton was
chasing. Kobe was clearly the "Robin" of the group.

Granted--yeah--Payton is prone to whining. But he's dead-on right about this
one.

You mean like how Dwayne Wade and Eddie Jones will be playing "for" Shaq?

Shaq deserves to be played for. On the other hand, His Egoness deserves no
such equivalent.

aaawwww poor gary.
guess he shouldn't have picked up the player option then....
the writing has been on the wall for weeks.
ive never liked payton...i hope LA tells him play out your contract or sit
for a year.
of course, it makes more sence to trade him, but still, its the principle.
if you dont want to be there, dont pick up the option.

I wonder if maybe a tiny part of Shaq's wanting out of town might not just
be to be away from that pain in the ass Payton.....like 95% Kobe 5% Gary.
Dwayne Wade is going to be the next point guard starting for the Eastern
All-Stars after Jason Kidd's grip on that ends....well also when he get's
those turnovers down..way way WAY down...but still....I bet the Heat will be
a much higher scoring team next season.
