Several thousand miles away from his new home in Boston, Gary Payton could
see the events unfolding before they happened and predicted Kobe Bryant
would alienate the one person who publicly supported him through his rape
trial, basketball tribulations and off-court troubles.
"The way things are going there right now, I'm not sure I could have played
with those guys this year," Payton said at the time. "And it's not just him.
Kobe is a great player, but everything is different, and I didn't sign there
for that.
"I went there to win a championship. Same with Karl (Malone). Now all of
that is changed. It's about him. It's all about him. And you watch: Karl
won't stand for that.
"You'll give up a part of who you are, sacrifice your game, if you think
you're winning (a championship)," Payton said. "You ain't doing that just so
someone can do this and that and run the whole damn show. Nah, that ain't
happening." >> Stay informed about: Payton predicted Kobe/Malone rift |

Of course Gary's words should be taken at face value, since he is not
angry at the Lakers.
>"The way things are going there right now, I'm not sure I could have played

Sure.
That's why you refused to report to the physical exam when the trade was
announced, and that's why Doc Rivers had to fly to Los Angeles to
convince you to leave the Lakers and report to the training camp.
>"And it's not just him.

Yeah, you didn't sign up for the injuries that happened last year too.
You whining moron.
>"I went there to win a championship. Same with Karl (Malone). Now all of

Of course this makes you sad, angry and jealous.
All these years and you still have to find a team that you stay in it
and be liked.
Even Seattle traded you when they had the chance.
>And you watch: Karl won't stand for that.
He won't stand that the Lakers have no chance of winning an NBA title
this year.

And of course Gary Payton is the one to provide expert opinions about
wining championships, after all he won many of them.
And of course he sacrificed everything last year when he was in the
Lakers, he sacrificed his game and gave up a part of who is, right?
He started moaning about the triangle offense in the training camp, and
them started complaining during the season, went public with his agent
with his infamous "I didn't sign up for this", and complained constantly
for not getting the ball enough and why the offense didn't run through
him.
Yeah, Payton is the one to talk. >> Stay informed about: Payton predicted Kobe/Malone rift |

I dont really think thats fair, Shaq and Kobe have 3 rings, Shaq may well
have a shot to take his third team to the finals. It remains to be seen if
Kobe will ever get there again.

My guess is that Kobe wins more rings, that Shaq retires without another
one, and that we both agree that Payton will never ever play on a
championship team.

And meanwhile, Steve Kerr trumps them all. Since context doesn't matter at
all, only total ring count, he's the greatest of all time!

I agree.
Shaq's attitude and selfishness will stand in the way, we'll see who is
to be blamed for the Heat not getting a title this year or the next
year. >> Stay informed about: Payton predicted Kobe/Malone rift |

Which is how? You called his credentials into question. Which is fine,
that's your right, though I question your use of rings won by an individual
as the only basis for whether or not a statement is correct. I'd trust Gary
Payton's or John Stockton's statements on this top more than I'd trust Steve
Kerr's or Luc Longley's.
Do you disagree with the following statement, and if so, why?
---
"You'll give up a part of who you are, sacrifice your game, if you think
you're winning (a championship)," Payton said. "You ain't doing that just so
someone can do this and that and run the whole damn show. Nah, that ain't
happening."
---
That doesn't stand out as a stupid statement to me. It was remarkable that
Payton and Malone signed for less than market value in the first place to
come to the Lakers - it shouldn't come as a surprise that they came for a
pretty specific situation and it wouldn't be worth sticking around when that
situation changed.

You are arguing against an arguement that I am not making. You think that
I'm stating that the player that has 2 rings>player with 3>player with four
and so on. Not so.
What I did comment on is that GP, who has no rings, was making a statement
about Kobe, who has three rings, stating that he goes about things the wrong
way if he wants to win a championship.
just sayin'

That's cool, but Payton never said anything about Kobe going about things
the wrong way if he wants to win a championship. Payton said that the
current Lakers' team is not an attractive one for a veteran looking to win a
championship, like Malone and himself.
You're right that Payton isn't necessarily qualified to give advice on the
former; but it seems as if he's perfectly placed to make astute comments
about the latter.
