Karen Habrukowich was an all-tournament team selection this weekend at
the Coors Classic in Boulder, Colo.
Boulder, Colo. - The Quakers battled the No.22 team in the land,
falling to Maryland, 76-56, in the consolation final of the 18th Annual
Coors Classic hosted by the University of Colorado. Karen Habrukowich
was selected as a member of the all-tournament team, finishing the two-
day event with 15 points, three rebounds, four assists, two blocks and
one steal.
Penn (2-2) led early, leading by as many as three points on three
separate occasions. The Red and Blue's first lead came one a Cat
Makarewich trey at the 18:45 mark of the first half to give the Quakers
their first lead. Katie Kilker, who finished with 10 points and four
rebounds against the Terrapins (3-1), hit an eight-footer at 17:23 mark
for a 5-2 Penn lead. Habrukowich gave her team a 9-6 lead with a lay
up at the 15:39 mark off a pass from Kilker. Maryland took the lead on
two of Laura Harper's, also an all-tournament team selection, eight
points. Penn pulled to within one at 14-13 on an Amanda Kammes lay up
but would not get any closer. The Terrapins closed out the final 12:46
of the first half on a 20-4 run to take a 34-17 lead into the locker
room. Kammes scored six points, adding three boards and a career-high
three blocks.
The Red and Blue fought Maryland the entire half. Despite losing by
double digits, Penn scored 39 second-half points to Maryland's 42,
shooting 84.2 percent from the charity stripe (16-of-19) and 88.0
percent for the game (22-of-25). Many Quakers recorded career-high
point totals. Lauren Pears poured in eight points on 3-of-4 shooting,
Jenna Markoff hit one field goal and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the
free-throw line for a career-high six points and Kmiberly Franklin hit
her first collegiate three pointer with 31 seconds remaining in the
second half.
Maryland had a trio of players score double figures in the victory, led
by Crystal Langhorne and Shay Doron, each with 16 points, and Kalika
France with 11 points.
Penn heads back to Philadelphia to resume its Big 5 season with a
showdown at Saint Joseph's.
