Jewel Clark scores 30 points along with 12 rebounds in the
Quakers' 70-64 win over Temple. Clark recorded her third
double-double of the season and surpassed Dionne Anthon
(1988-92) for third on Penn's all-time scoring list.
Dec. 9, 2003
PHILADELPHIA - Penn women's basketball team fought Temple every
step of the way during second half to pick up a 70-64 win over
the Owls. It is the first win over Temple since the 1999-2000
season and the first win at the Liacouras Center in nearly 10
years. Jewel Clark dominated with 30 points, 12 rebounds, four
assists and four steals. She becomes Penn's third leading scorer
with 1,307 points.
Clark paced the Red and Blue (3-3, 1-2 Big 5) all night, scoring
17 of her 30 points in the second half in order to answer Temple's
Candice Dupree. Dupree scored 12 of the Owls' first 20 points in
the second half, finishing with 29 points to lead Temple
(2-2, 0-1 Big 5).
Clark is averaging double figures in points (17.7 ppg) and rebounds
(11.7 rpg) against Philadelphia Big 5 opponents this season. She
also surpassed Dionne Anthon (1988-92) for third on the all-time
scoring list (1,293) with her 30-point performance.
After Dupree scored six straight points to give Temple a 47-45
lead with 12 minutes, 12 seconds remaining, Katie Kilker and
Clark kept Penn in the game for the next five minutes. Clark
scored eight points and Kilker dropped in two huge field-goals
over that time span. She finished with eight points, all in the
second half. With a little over nine minutes remaining, Clark
stole a Temple pass and scored a fast break lay-up, giving the
Quakers a 54-53 lead.
From that point, the Owls went on a 7-1 run to take a 60-55 lead
with five minutes, 24 seconds remaining. Six ties and 11 lead
changes allowed neither team to break away from the other during
the second half. But, less than two minutes later, Penn would
take the lead for good on a fast break lay-up from Maria DiDonato,
who had five points and three key assists down the stretch.
The Red and Blue extended their lead to 68-64 on a field-goal by
Kilker and a game-sealing three-pointer from Cat Makarewich with
1:07 left on the clock.
This was the first win over Temple since a landslide victory over
the Owls on Nov. 20, 1999, 79-50. The last time the Quakers came
out of the Liacouras Center with a win was on Jan. 11, 1994,
defeating Temple 63-55.
Penn faced adversity during the first half, down 18-9 a little
less than 10 minutes into the game. The Quakers outscored Temple,
20-9, the rest of the way sparked by three steals from Joey Rhoads,
two steals and assists from Amanda Kammes and seven first half points
from Mikaelyn Austin. Austin finished the game with 10 points to join
Clark in double figures.
Cynthia Jordan and Christena Hamilton joined Dupree in double figures
with 10 points a piece for Temple.
The Quakers get a break from the action until Dec. 20-21, when they
travel to the Columbus, Ohio for the Buckeye Classic at The Ohio
State University. Penn opens the tournament against Dayton at 4 p.m.
on Dec. 20. The championship/consolation game against either Ohio
State or St. John's will be played the following day (Dec, 21) at
either noon or 2 p.m.
