That's a definite No Class move. It must have especially rankled
Terrier fans, if the B.C. fans pulled that after what happened to
Travis Roy.

I used to enjoy watching college hockey. My school only had a club
team, but a buddy of mine played goal for them, and the tickets were
cheap, so I caught a lot of the games. I went through a conflicted
period when Wisconsin, who I hate on principle, had on their roster
several draft choices of my favorite NHL team. So, I'd watch their
games on TV to see how "my guys" were doing. I eventually resisted
the Dark Side.

Same for WGN's Cub broadcasts. Many people were fans of the Cubs all
over the Midwest long before that, or their fathers and grandfathers
were, before expansion. Before the superstations and cable, extensive
radio networks buttressed team's regional support.

When the Braves split from Milwaukee, and after the Senators left DC
for Arlington, there was no major league team south of Cincy and east
of Texas. They had regional appeal before they WTBS got on the bird.

I have a feeling this is the reason. People want to be connected to a
winner. That Baylor alum mentioned earlier- rooting for U of Texas-
is just plain wrong.

Remember Fonda bitching about the Braves, but then they dragged out
footage of her in the stands, gleefully doing the tomahawk chop,
giggling like she did in 'nam pretending to shoot down Americans?

It depends on many factors. In St. Louis, most people have forgotten
the football Cardinals and embraced the Rams. That was helped a lot by
having a team that could actually WIN.

Plus the Cardinals' ownership and management could make even the Rams'
look stable.

Being a graduate of one of the schools that was mentioned (Duke) I
find a lot of bandwagon people jumping on (or, because of this season,
jumping off.) At a game tonight (women's NCAA) wearing a Duke
sweatshirt, I was asked which school I attended. Especially with
State schools, as mentioned more fans seem to not be alums than are.
Having grown up in the NYC area, where pro teams dominate, I will
mention that in college towns (or just areas without a reasonably
local team) the interest the pro teams get in the big cities is
definitely directed to the schools. (Often, there isn't much else
going on other than the local college/university team's games.)

Yeah, I think that's right. Mind you, besides propinquity and a lack
of competition for attention, top level college programs have often
been part of a PR campaign by colleges. One reason why there are so
many more DI basketball programs than there used to be is because a
winning hoops team is a cost-effective way to raise a school's
profile, attract donations, and, in the case of state schools, shore
up funding from the taxpayers. Using the state university's sports
excellence as a political prop goes back at least as far as Huey
Long's support - some would even say meddling - for the LSU Tigers.
State politicians have been known to demand that state schools
schedule each other, or risk a critical look at their budgets. You
don't have to be great at DI football or basketball to be a fine
school, or the Ivy league would be an academic backwater. (The Ivies
are usually very good at the "non-revenue" sports, anyway.) But
success at crew or fencing may not bring in the big bucks or good
press for St. Whod'yacallit or University of State at City.

Thanls, but this...

....is just as bad as GO, BADGERS!!!!! Given the reciprical enrollment
plan that the UW and U of M systems have, taxes are extorted from me
to pay for both institutions. So, as far as the WCHA goes, if and
when I pay attention to it, my love goes to Denver or Colorado
College.

I don't see much of a mystery there if they live in same town or even
the same state.

An embarrasing story for anyone who played for The Babson College
Beavers Hockey team came a few years ago....they lost to the
Massachusetts College of Art in a hockey game. Ugh!!!!
