I suppose before the new season starts, I ought to clean up this bit
of unfinished business from last season. Actually, with only three
people, it wasn't hard to score. (Only two people played the previous
year. At a 50% annual growth rate, it won't be too many decades before
the entire planet is participating in the contest.) And the winner is:
the man from Chile, who correctly guessed (uh, calculated) the winner
of all 8 first round match-ups (versus 7 for Larry and myself) and 3
of the second round match-ups (versus 2 and 1, respectively). Nobody
got any of the latter rounds correct.

So, Ed (don't worry, Google yields 868,000,000 results for just "Ed")
by way of payout, hmm... well, how about, you know that drink you were
going to buy me? Let's just call it even.

Or, I can send you one of my Billy Joel albums. Your choice.

If this were professional wrestling, the Spurs could beat Dallas, and
just as they were getting set to play Chicago (or whoever the Eastern
Champ is), the Mavs players could jump the San Antonio players in the
locker room, maybe even out on the court during warmups, beat them
down, and then go on to play Chicago.

Interesting how little faith these posts show in Miami -- only Brian
has them beating Chicago, and nobody has them going as far as the
ECF. Of course, the Heat did lose game 1.--Joe

Absolutely. And announcers screaming, "The Mavs? What are THEY doing
here? Oh, the CARNAGE!"

That's a good analysis. There are a lot of wild cards in this series
-- how banged up is Wade? How in or out of shape is Shaq? How much
does playoff experience/championship experience count? Is Chicago the
finely-coached machine peaking at the right time (including killing
Detroit) they seemed to be for most of the last part of the season, or
are they the team that folded under pressure in a meaningful game (the
last game of the year against the Nets)? And just how dang good is
Deng? Looks like a long tough series to me -- and as a Pistons fan,
that's just fine.--Joe

Yeah, don't ask me how that one will work out. The entire Spurs team
will be stricken with traumatic herpes -- I mean sores popping out of
the mouth and oozing -- resulting in the WCF runner-up going to the
Finals? Okay. That's my prediction then.

Only if there are collapsable chairs present.

Conventional wisdom seems to have it going 7 games. I notice that
prognosticators (including me) predict 7 game series when the prophet is
just not clear how it'll go. I'd say most published reports I've read
have Miami in 7.

The thing that bugs me is the conventional wisdom that Shaq can "turn it
on". Remember his second-to-last year with the Lakers (I'm terrible with
years) when he had surgury, the Lakers took a low seed but were
"dangerous"? He couldn't "turn it on" then. And he turned in quite a
number of games like yesterday's stinker in the playoffs last year.

There are three major differences this year, as I see it, in the
Bulls-Heat first round:

1.) The Bulls did exactly what they did to Shaq yesterday in last year's
playoffs, only they had Chandler and Sweetney (two human foul machines)
doing it. Wallace is a huge plus there, since he can actually stay in
the game. It's not a matter of "shutting down Shaq" 1-on-1 defensively,
because you're going to get at least half of the charges called against
you (or get called for charges taking it to his gut when the Heat are on
defensive).

2.) Wade's hurt, but last year, when Hinrich picked up fouls, the bench
was down to two short, very flawed guards (Duhon and Pargo). This
season, outside of Sefolosha, they also brought in Adrian Griffin
specifically to bother Wade and Lebron in the playoffs. Griff's just a
role player but he excelled as a defensive shooting guard (for most of
the season as a starter) in Dallas last year.

3.) Home court this time favors the Bulls

The major thing in the Heat's favor is just poise. Like you said,
Chicago can still be an annoyingly immature team, like a dog that is
*mostly* housebroken but you still wake up some mornings to a little
surprise in the living room.

The Jersey game, the Toronto game -- even Detroit, when they almost gave
up the lead thorugh missed free throws -- are cases in point. Jersey
though has had our number all year -- just 1-3, and all four games were
horribly lopsided.
