I think he's got a little start on that... didn't he decide not to
pick up the option on Ryan Gomes for next year, as well as a couple
other guys? Instead of paying him the minimum, McHale gets to match a
restricted free agent tender and let somebody else decide what Gomes
is worth. Actually now that I say it out loud, maybe that's a good
thing, if it means the GM setting a price tag on our players isn't
Kevin McHale.
He also does still have the Wolves paying out $14m over the next
couple years to Juwan Howard, another $7.5m to Greg Buckner, and $7.8m
to Mark Madsen, in addition to whatever the salary cap ramifications
are for Troy Hudson's buy-out, so he's got a few legacy contract
decisions to screw the front office with. This year the team spends
significantly less than half its payroll on everyday players, and 25%
of the payroll goes to players who are no longer with the team.
Next summer the Wolves will have a top 4 draft pick, Walker and
Buckner's combined $13m salaries in the final guaranteed years of
their contracts to trade to a team looking to clear cap room, and no
cap room until '09. McHale can probably package the pick and the
ending contracts with a young player or two and get Shaquille O'Neal
or Alonzo Mourning back from the Heat as that "dominant center we've
always wanted" only to see them retire after the first pre-season
game.
But that's months away, and right now the Wolves are in the midst of
their longest winning streak of the season!
