WEST BLOOMFIELD -- The man who prosecutors say ignited a brawl at the
Pistons-Pacers game served time in prison for assault and then violated the
terms of his release by driving drunk in 2002, according to authorities and
public records.
John F. Green, 39, a home renovator from West Bloomfield, first declined to
say whether he was the man who precipitated the melee Friday by lobbing a
plastic cup with ice at Pacer Ron Artest. Later, he denied that it was him.
"It might look like it from the video, but I didn't do it," he said Monday
in front of his home. "If they're going to charge me, charge. But what are
they going to charge me with?"
By Monday night, however, his lawyer backtracked from the statement.
"If he did it, the most he did was throw a cup of ice," attorney Sean
Patrick Smith said. "Now he's being made out to be a monster." >> Stay informed about: Prosecutor IDs Metro man who threw cup |

They had this weasel on ESPN last night, spot shadowed him tossing the cup
underhanded directly at Artest. Pretty good shot, really, but also pretty
damning evidence. They also had a brief interview of him where he danced
around the issue for a bit then finally said that whatever the film shows is
what happened.
They also reported he's had a couple DUIs & a couple assaults or other
charges in the past. He was also the neighbor of the DA or someone involved
in the case in the past.
IMO, he's screwed. And rightly so.

The usual lawyer lies. Besides, a cup of ice would have more chance of
harming someone than liquid. >> Stay informed about: Prosecutor IDs Metro man who threw cup |

I saw this show. The thing that stuck out to me was the guy's body
language after he threw the cup. He stuck his hands in his pockets,
looked away from Artest and generally started whistling dixie. In
other words he was brave/stupid enough to provoke Artest, but not man
enough to let Artest have any idea it was him who was doing the
provoking. Typical pussy move, really. He should be fined the same
amount of money that Artest will lose from the suspension--five mill. >> Stay informed about: Prosecutor IDs Metro man who threw cup |

This guy is total scum. I saw clips of his interview. He won't admit that he
threw the drink, he says that the drink was thrown from his vicinity. Also,
he claims that he was kicked by Artest when he was holding Artest back.
Implying that's why he started punching Artest from behind. The video shows
that Artest did not back-kick John Green. >> Stay informed about: Prosecutor IDs Metro man who threw cup |

This isn't the first time Pistons tickets have led to trouble for John
Green.
The 39-year-old West Bloomfield man who authorities said threw the blue
plastic cup at Indiana Pacers player Ron Artest that sparked the brawl at
the Palace of Auburn Hills, tried to bribe a Bloomfield Hills police officer
with two Pistons tickets in 1988, according to court records.
Green, who has had a number of run-ins with police, pleaded guilty to
attempted bribery of the officer -- who is now the Oakland County sheriff,
Michael Bouchard.
Bouchard said Green offered him the tickets and "anything he wanted" to make
a traffic ticket go away. Bouchard reported the bribe and Green later
pleaded guilty to the offense. His sentence was unclear in court records.
"He was very insistent -- and very nervous," recalled Bouchard. "He was
struggling with how to get the deal done and not get caught."
According to court records, Green spent 30 days in the Oakland County Jail
in 1985, charged with larceny from a building and uttering and publishing.
He got into trouble again in January 1988 when he tried to bribe Bouchard
after being ticketed for a driving offense.
In July 1988, Green left a halfway house without permission, went to the
Troy apartment of former girlfriend Susan Sofy and assaulted her.
He hit her with a telephone -- breaking her wrist -- kicked her in the
stomach and threatened to throw her from a second-story window, court
records show. When she ran for help Green allegedly stole her car.
He pleaded guilty to assault with intent to do great bodily harm and
unlawfully driving a car, and was sentenced to three to 20 years. In 1995,
Lori Szymanski of Royal Oak obtained a restraining order against Green after
he allegedly broke into her home and began stalking her. In court records,
she said they had dated briefly the summer before and that he threatened her
and picked fights with her friends. >> Stay informed about: Prosecutor IDs Metro man who threw cup |

If, by David Stern's own admission, Artest's suspension factored in his
past behavior, what would be a fair sentence for Mr. Green, I wonder, if
he's treated the same way. >> Stay informed about: Prosecutor IDs Metro man who threw cup |

wow .. really?
You seriously think he should be fined five million dollars, for throwing a
plastic cup on Ron Artest?

Oh my goodness, you Pacer fans are an ignorant bunch.
David Stern can implement suspensions on Ron Artest and his fellow Pacer
"homies", but he has no authority over the cup throwing fan.
The District Attorney, separate from Stern and the NBA, will determine if
charges should be filed against Green and Artest.
LMFAO.

You see ... the NBA "suspended" Ron Artest, and ultimately he will LOSE 5
million dollars in salary.
The NBA can not "suspend" and "fine" the guy who threw the cup .... he's not
an NBA employee, Ron Artest is.
So I guess you are saying, the court of law should fine him the same amount
.... 5 million dollars?
And who gets this money?
Don't you think this will set a precedent? From now on ... anyone who throws
a cup will be fined 5 million dollars.
LMFAO!
Interesting thought process you have there.

LMFAO, what a rube.
Reading comprehension. Look into it. My comment made no suggestion
that David Stern has authority over the cup-throwing fan. It merely
compares the measure by which the two mean are being judged. Read it
again, dumbshit.
Thanks for the unintentional comedy.

Was Artest fined? If so, I did not see it.
