Well, it's not quite that brutal. Martin will remain with the
organization in some capacity:
http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/377416
....
One day after shaking up the starting lineup, team sources say Toronto will
sign free agent Linton Johnson to a 10-day contract today, bringing in the
6-foot-8 forward to add more athleticism and depth to the wing positions.
To make room for the addition of Johnson, the Raptors are going to waive
veteran guard Darrick Martin but keep him in the organization in some
capacity.
Johnson is a 27-year old who spent part of this season with the Phoenix Suns
after bouncing around a handful of other NBA organizations. Finances, or
roster "fit" have always precluded him from sticking long-term with any of
the organizations he's been with.
In six games with the Suns this season, Johnson averaged 2.5 points and 2.2
rebounds.
Undrafted after spending four years at Tulane, Johnson's also been with
Chicago, San Antonio, New Jersey and New Orleans in the last five seasons.
How he fits into Toronto's long-term plans is unclear. But he will be given
a chance to compete with Jamario Moon, Carlos Delfino and Jason Kapono for
playing time at small forward and, perhaps, address some defensive
deficiencies at that position.
....
I was at a "meet and greet" kind of event at the ACC before the game last
night. All the executives were there - even Peddie. A few Raptors too.
Colangelo was doing a Q&A, and I thought he had mentioned they were going to
be adding a player today. But some players showed up and distracted me.
Who wouldn't be distracted if Primoz was standing right behind you?

Given this news -- just how bad is Gerald Green? He's sitting at home

Perhaps its the teams way of saying:
"TJ. Stop running around and risking your neck in injury. Play
steady. Don't get hurt, because if you do, Delfino is your backup and
we all know what that means..." >> Stay informed about: Raps kick D-Mart to the curb. |

It's also my understanding that someone signed so late in the season
won't be eligible to be on the team's playoff roster. If that's the case, I
don't know what the point of this move is.

I think the Star article you posted was rewritten later in the day by
Doug Smith. This is from the updated article:
--quote--
Johnson won?t be able to officially sign his contract until after Martin
clears waivers later this week but he will be eligible to play in the
playoffs with Toronto.
--end--

Hmm.. that's strange. I could have sworn that the Clippers and Sam
Cassell were in a huge rush to get him waived 3 weeks ago because they
were dangerously close to that deadline where Cassell wouldn't be able
to play for the Celtics in the playoffs..
Maybe there's a different rule for players on actual contracts? >> Stay informed about: Raps kick D-Mart to the curb. |

It does seem strange. Sniffing around I found other sources confirming
his eligibility eg the National Post, but none gave reasons. I thought
there was a deadline of March 1st, but who knows? Anyway, someone is
bound to question this on one of the sportswriter's blogs, and the
answer will come out.
This should be interesting; guys on 10-days tend to play well when
they're given minutes, and Johnson apparently can play some defence.
Could be just what the doctor ordered, and the price is right. >> Stay informed about: Raps kick D-Mart to the curb. |

Yea, and then some time next season some idiot will impersonate him on

Worst case scenario - he's this year's Luke Jackson. Okay, I guess
things could be worse than that. He could be part of a terrorist sleeper
cell. That would be worse.

Hah! Well, suppose he's this year's Juan Dixon. Remember when Dixon came
in and shot the lights out for a couple of games and people thought he
was good? Chuck Swirsky was in love with the guy, remember? Sometimes
players will play way above their level for a while after a move. >> Stay informed about: Raps kick D-Mart to the curb. |
