Pistons' Curry plans to shake up starting lineup
The most likely lineup Curry will look at will involve Rodney Stuckey
coming in to run the point, joining Allen Iverson, Richard Hamilton,
Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace.
http://www.nba.com/2008/news/features/rob_peterson/12/07/knicks.pistons/
NBA.com's John Schuhmann noted that the Pistons finished last season
fourth in defensive efficiency per 100 possessions. This year they're
20th. If you watched the Knicks slice-and-dice, pick-and-roll and
drive-and-kick the Pistons up-and-down the Garden floor to the tune of
65 points in the first half, you may have guessed the Pistons were 30th.
Iverson -- who has defended the passing lanes as well as any NBA player
in history -- isn't a lockdown defender and because of his size has a
hard time getting through pick-and-rolls. On Sunday, the Knicks
consistently exploited this weakness on screens early and often. No play
epitomized this better than the one that gave New York its biggest lead
of the day.
Chris Duhon, who had a game-high 25 points and nine assists, turned the
corner into the lane off a screen from David Lee. As the Pistons' posts
sagged to stop the drive, Al Harrington circled from the wing to the
spot Duhon and Lee vacated at the top of the key. Duhon turned and
whipped a pass to Harrington, who caught it in rhythm and calmly drained
a three to give the Knicks a 58-29 lead. >> Stay informed about: Rip the SF...? |

First off, the loss to the Knicks, THE KNICKS!!!!!, is worse than the
loss to the 76ers. Worse because at least the 76ers proved last
season they are a good team on offense and defense and can play with
anyone. The Knicks, on the other hand, are rebuilding this season and
have to deal with the soap opera that is Marbury. Yet the Pistons
made them look like world beaters on Sunday. Not just in the 4th
quarter, but the whole game.
Now about the story of moving Rip to SF....the only issue with this
lineup is Tayshaun at PF. Yes he's got long arms and is pretty
athletic, but there are plenty of PFs in the league that could just
drive him into the paint all night long and either wear him out or get
him to commit too many fouls.
Pistons have a much better advantage against teams when you have Rip
(the Rip of the pre-AI days) running around the floor making the other
SG chase him and then having to be defended by Rip. Tayshaun at SF is
also a handful on offense and defense for just about every other SF in
the league.
Coach Curry may want AI to "take over" games but that isn't getting
wins for the Pistons. It's taking away their defensive match ups and
AI's porous defense puts a strain on the 4 other guys on the floor.
Sure AI gets a steal now and again, but it doesn't cancel out all the
times the other teams PG drives through him, around him, gets him
stuck in the middle of a screen so he can't defend or blocks him out
from a rebound...all the things that didn't happen when Chauncey was
the Pistons' PG. Coach has to come to the realization that the
Pistons first must get their defensive swagger back and secondly need
to have a PG that can run the team first and worry about his own shot
second. The only solution I see is to start Stuckey at PG and have
Iverson coming off the bench.
If they go with the proposed line-up from the MLIVE report, it will
just lead to more embarrassing loses like the last two, IMO.

You'll continue to get this kind of schizms with a first year coach. He
obviously did not have his team prepared or thought the problems NY is
having would tally an easy win.
Curry isn't the answer, Iverson is...
You have to let AI run and let everyone else run with him.

Say this is the starting line-up and leave his name off.
He should volunteer instead of playing 3 players out of position so as
not to insult him and weaken the bench with no Stuckey there.
Think on what he can do against the easts 2nd units and play at his
tempo with maxiell getting O rebounds... while the group that are used
to each other play their game. >> Stay informed about: Rip the SF...? |

He shouldn't be with the second unit...
The first unit should be contributing and benefitting the way you
suggest the second unit could. LOL the more talented group should be
able to play with Allen rather than the second group. The first are
supposed to have a better knowledge of the game!
Most of the time you're on point, but here you dropped the ball. To
even suggest a talent such as Allen's should be benched is blasphomy.

LOL...you prefer losing than playing the units that actually fit the
others games...all about the individual.
6-8 since the Trade.

The trade for Allen Iverson was a massive mistake for this season. The team
is hopeless with him in the lineup. 3 losses to teams with sub 500 records
speaks for itself. >> Stay informed about: Rip the SF...? |

Just which starter or other piston is forcing AI to jack up terrible
shots instead of passing? Or telling him to let his guy drive by?
Stuckey assists per 48 minutes 12.2 AI 6.5
Why should they be wanting to give him more shots?
Last 10 games 4-6
AI FGP .392 3s .222
Rip .508 .412
Prince .443 .343
'Sheed .455 .426
afflalo .541 .462
Maxiell .620
Johnson .579
Herrmann .444
Pistons .464
minus AI the rest of the Pistons FGP was .488 the last 10 games >> Stay informed about: Rip the SF...? |

The trade wasn't all by itself a mistake. I'd even say that starting him
until this point hasn't been a mistake. What will be a mistake is
keeping him as a starter through the end of the season.
Getting the cap space from losing his salary will be a very good thing.
I think sitting him on the bench as soon as he showed up would have been
more disruptive than letting everyone know exactly what he's capable of
doing before sitting him. And future FAs will be reluctant to sign if
the Pistons are too quick on the draw about benching guys who don't fit
in on day one.
But the time is pretty much here for the Pistons to face facts and let
Iverson know that they can't survive playing 4 on 5 every time they're on
defense, and that he'll have to earn starter's minutes. >> Stay informed about: Rip the SF...? |

At the rate they are going they will be lucky to make the playoffs to
meet boston or cleveland in the first round... kind of like when you
claimed adding AI to denver would make them west contenders and they
instead were swept by the spurs and lakers at #8 seed...

What happens in January? AI starts shooting over 38%?
What happened to 'they will be so good and deep with AI they should not
lose any games the rest of the season'?
As a Blazer fan I hated the deal because it would make Denver
stronger...now that prediction looks right...
detroit 6-8 since the trade dropped from 2nd to 7th, denver 14-3 since
the trade, went from 7th to 2nd...
Pistons fans may love this deal about Jan 2010 or 2011 when they have an
elite free agent that fits after dumping AI and his contract next summer. >> Stay informed about: Rip the SF...? |
