I know everybody likes pulling for upsets in the tourney. If not for any
reason other than an easier path to the championship for their team.
I've been guilty of it in the past myself.

however, this year is different for me. I want us to play the best teams
possible. until recently, only jayhawk fans were giving this team any
recognition at all. the media was most guilty.

If the Hawks go all the way, look at the path they might possibly take.
Kentucky, UCLA and Carolina. The only storied programs left out are Duke
and maybe Indiana. throw in defending champion Florida and this will be
a mighty feat. I'm praying for it. this team is special, and on our best
day, no one is beating us.

You bring up an interesting point:

The College Basketball Pantheon:

Duke
UNC
Kansas
Kentucky
UCLA
Indiana

Not quite the Pantheon:

Michigan State
.....who else?

Who's in the 1st tier, and who's in the 2nd and 3rd tiers? And by
which criterion?

No one. Possible exception to Lithuania.

Which is really strange, because woofing is about the only
way UNC is going to lose.

It's fair to say that UK and Duke were down this year . . . .

Still, a win's a win, and counts in the head-to-head.

Whoa, look at that -- a properly punctuated aposiopesis!

Has anyone started the argument about which metric to use?

"There is a species of controversy, which, from the very nature of
language and of human ideas, is involved in perpetual ambiguity, and
can never, by any precaution or any definitions, be able to reach a
reasonable certainty or precision. These are the controversies
concerning the degrees of any quality or circumstance. Men may argue
to all eternity, whether Hannibal be a great, or a very great, or a
superlatively great man, what degree of beauty Cleopatra possessed,
what epithet of praise Livy or Thucydides is entitled to, without
bringing the controversy to any determination. The disputants may
here agree in their sense, and differ in the terms, or _vice versa_;
yet never be able to define their terms, so as to enter into each
other's meaning: Because the degrees of these qualities are not, like
quantity or number, susceptible of any exact mensuration, which may be
the standard in the controversy."

Of course.

Just a hook for the Hume quote you snipped.

The aposiopesization of rsbc!

You can't hurt yourself as easily with it as with an epee, but it's not as
heavy as a broadaxe.

And a couple of power forwards, please, God.

Eh, I've always been a fan of the idea of the toughest teams in the
path going down before we have to deal with them (see 1988 for
example), but in retrospect it would be really cool if that happened.
I'll happily worry about the Salukis for now, though . . .

Come on, now. Putting Kentucky in there because they are "storied" is,
well, insane. They were an 8 seed, and lucky to get that. Big deal.

Besides, there is at least one team that could still beat you on your best
day, but it would take their best day to do it...UNC.
