Don't forget Joel Freeland & Dale Ellis' son, Chris, a 6-8 F we picked
up to add to the summer league roster.

It would appear we have a lot of guys to send to the D-League to keep
Schenscher company. How many guys can a team keep there anyway? I
tried to figure it out once but couldn't pin it down to a number. I
think we get up to 2 guys who have played in the NBA before & then get
to split the roster with other teams, but I haven't seen a clear
reading on it.

As for Green, other than being named after a large soup bowl, his
defensive skills & lack of height will be his biggest hurdles.
(Speaking as a 5'8" guy, it's hard to imagine 6'1" as too short, but
so be it) Depending on how the rest of the Gs shake out over the
summer, he could get the end of the bench to start the season. Not
likely, but possible.

Go Blazers !

Freeland is under contract overseas another season too. Think he will ever make the NBA?

Not sure if there is a limit. I have seen them play part of the games and add new ones and players
on two different teams.

I suppose they may have made some promise to Freddy too. He gave up his guranteed 3 mil for them,
seems they could at least ofer him a mil if they have room.

I've never seen him play, but from what I've read there are those who
think so. A 6'11" guy who can hit from outside, play solid D, & run
is certainly worth waiting a while. He's only been playing organized
ball for something like 5 years too, so it will definitely take some
more seasoning,

Thanks for the info, so it sounds pretty fluid then? Kind of what I
figured, but no complaining about a virtual minor league on my part.

I would like to see Freddy come back along with Ime, but it will be a
numbers game. It's sure nice to think we might have too many good
guys for a change, isn't it? : )

Well both for Freddy's sake and for not wanting them to get known to skew over players it would be
good to make him the offer. Zeke sounded like he was keeping them. So Maybe he will get his 3 mil
there.

Thomas was playing for the media yesterday but the fact is they have a
glut of Gs right now so it's very possible Freddy &/or Dan could be
cut loose.

It was nice to hear that Zach is now pure as the driven snow. Guess

Cancel that, he and his agent thinks he is worth most or all of a MLE.

I think they will find those run out before he is the near the top of the remaining FAs.

Ah, the elusive Joel Freeland exclusive!

http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=2160

Joel Freeland, Portland Trailblazers- The #30 pick in 2006, could barely
manage to get off the bench in the ACB league besides playing garbage
time minutes. He obviously is a few years away and Portland fans
shouldnt be holding their breath at this point.

From Blazers edge:

...they talked about Freeland a bit. I guess that he is going to be on the summer league team.
Sounded like he might play one more year overseas before coming over, but who knows. They also
mentioned that he was in a private competitive workout against Spencer Hawes and apparently
destroyed him.
by HarryManback on Fri Jun 29, 2007 at 01:18:58 PM EDT

I don't know if that's good news for us
or bad news for Sacramento. Either Freeland is really gonna be good, or Hawes really sucks.

===============
Since he was a first round pick if he comes over they have to pay him. Someone later in that blog
suggested they sign him and put him in the D league.
Seems a good plan to me. Get him some better coaching and/or get him off the books in 2 years.

Yeah, it reminds me of 2002 or so when Kwame Brown elevated himself to
the #1 pick by "destroying" Tyson Chandler in a game of 1-on-1. Chandler
was still "Baby Garnett" then and anyone who could beat Baby Garnett
must be Baby Duncan!

It kind of clouds the issue to judge players on how high they were
drafted, or what kind of workout they had on such and such a date, or
how they did in a euro league. A good example is Webster, who had a
killer workout and was a lottery pick. But the consensus of scouts
around the league after his first year was that if he had played a
year of college, his game would have been exposed, and he would not
have been drafted. So should we look at him as an underachieving
lottery pick or an overachieving undrafted player? I would say
neither; just watch and see what management does with him and where he
ends up in the rotation. McMillan will give him the minutes he
deserves.

Freeland supposedly got a bad deal in the euro league because of his
draft status; they were not excited about developing him for an NBA
team. Do I believe this? I don't know. Once again, watch what
management does; that will tell you more than Internet chatter.

Not as high likely but someone still would have fallen for that pure shot.

Nate is not the coach as summer league and even from the standpoint of an open roster spot likely
they ask him to stay in Europe another year.

Euroleague teams tend to dole out minutes not by talent but by senority too.

>Euroleague teams tend to dole out minutes not by talent but by senority too.

and some euro-teams tend to bury nba-drafted players at the end of the
bench. That appears to be the case with Freeland.

I've read a couple of things that implied that Freeland had really
surprised the blazer staff this time.

And then I listened to Quick's podcast from yesterday. Both Quick and
the guy interviewing him have watched some of the practices. And they
were both basically saying "wow...freeland's a whole lot better then
we thought" kind of things. They said he was up to around 250 lbs and
was "very physical". Quick compared him to "aggressive physical"
version of a young LaFrentz. That made me think two things: Freeland
may make the team...and Quick is a writer and that's what he comes up
with?

Simply put: portland is overloaded at C/PF. Oden and Aldridge for
sure. According to Quick, KP is really high on Frye..."off the charts"
is KP's assessment...so Frye is there. McRoberts will get a chance
because he comes cheap and he's being compared to a PF version of Luke
Walton; and it doesn't hurt that he's oden's best friend. And that
leaves Joel, Raef, and Freeland. Portland can't carry 7 bigs out of 15
spots. So either they ship Freeland back...and he absolutely doesn't
want to go and he isn't getting playing time in europe...little
progression that way; or they figure out something with Pryz or
Lafrentz.

If Allen buys out Francis, he may have spent enough money this summer.
So that would leave 2 possible scenarios: Trading Joel or waiving
Lafrentz. I'd choose the latter because even when Raef's contract is
an expiring one, I don't think portland would get anything of value
for him.

As to Martel: it's been my hunch, and quick fairly well confirmed it,
that the next 6-7 months are sink or swim time for him. Both Nate and
KP have given multiple hints that their patience is wearing thin with
martel's "progression". The coaches, the FO, the fans all realize that
if Martel could become the kind of player his athleticism and shooting
stroke "foretell" then he'd be the solution at SF and even backup SG.
But a ton of physical tools aren't making up for a pound of basketball
IQ.

And considering that the blazers are apparently targeting the summer
of 2009 for cap space room, martel's projected salary of 5 million is
a major "hey...wait a minute!". So I predict either Martel starts the
season showing major progress in his game or he will be traded by next
Feb.
