Clippers sign Azubuike
Warriors have seven days to match guard's offer sheet
Janny Hu, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, July 17, 2008
(07-17) 19:12 PDT -- The offseason maneuvering between the Warriors
and the Clippers continued Thursday when the Los Angeles team signed
Golden State guard Kelenna Azubuike to an offer sheet, league sources
told The Chronicle.
Once the Warriors receive a copy of the offer to Azubuike, they will
have a week to match it or let the 6-foot-5 guard become a Clipper.
While financial details of the offer were not available, the Clippers
had approximately $3 million in salary cap space left after signing
shot-blocker Marcus Camby earlier this week.
Azubuike averaged 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for the
Warriors last season, his first full year in the NBA. The Warriors
brought him to the NBA during the 2006-07 season, signing him out of
the NBA Development League, where he played for the Fort Worth team.
Since the end of last season, the Warriors have lost their top player,
Baron Davis, who used his free-agent status to sign with the Clippers.
The Warriors then tried to sign the Clippers' top player, Elton Brand,
but he opted to join Philadelphia. The Warriors then signed another
Clippers free agent, Corey Maggette.
Meanwhile, the Warriors may have to wait until today to learn if Rony
Turiaf will be joining them. Turiaf, a backup center for the Lakers,
signed an offer sheet from the Warriors last Thursday, but the Lakers
didn't receive a copy of it until the next day, so they have until
today to decide if they'll match or let Turiaf move north to Oakland.

I don't see why.
Magette's our starting 2, but Monta will play some minutes there, and we
have Belinelli. At the 3, we have Jackson, Harrington, and Randolph.
Even if Harrington is traded, we've got plenty of players for the
minutes there.

I can see an argument for doing it cause I'm not sold on Belinelli as an
NBA player yet, but if they're committed to giving him PT this year, there
aren't that many minutes left for Azubuike. And he's too short to play at
SF (though that never stops Nelson).

Warriors are going to need some scoring .. lost Baron, Ellis scoring will go
down as he has more responsibilities bringing down the ball. Azubuike
while not a polished player will give them some scoring, more consistent
than Marco. The only place we have improved is getting Maggette .. should
be a big improvement over Pietrus .. we have gone down in scoring from the
guard position. Marco has done little to prove he can be consistent.
It's not my money, but $3 mil seems like he could be worth it .. I don't
like the Turiaf signing ... I don't see how we needed him with all of our
young guys .. and then there is Harrington. I don't think Mully has a good
idea of how to build his team.
Hopefully the W's can find a player in from the D league again .. I don't
think they are going to sign Azubuike.

Scoring itself is not so much the problem as the loss is of someone who

I agree. I'd match. It's not like we'll do anything productive with that
$3 million otherwise.

I have a feeling C.J. Watson will get the backup PG minutes.

They need to match because $3 million is not a hefty price to pay for
a young 2-guard who will never be a star, but is a solid player who at
worst will be a nice bench piece. In a league where everyone is afraid
to give out big contracts because of the luxury tax, you have to lock
in young pieces like this for low prices. There may not be much PT for
'Buke with the roster as is currently, but what if SJax goes down with
an injury? What if the Warriors decide to trade SJax at some point?
What if the Warriors try to pull off a blockbuster trade for a big man
somewhere down the line, and they need his cap number plus his
attractiveness as a young player with promise to make a deal work?
They need to match because they can't keep letting assets get away for
nothing.

This argument never made much sense to me.
Maybe 3M isn't that much money, especially since our cap room is going
to vanish once we resign Monta and Biedrins.
But if two years from now, our owner is going to be blanching at signing
someone else because we're at the luxury tax threshhold ... well, I'm
not sure Kelenna is worth it.
He's a replaceable player, and in the short term I'd rather throw
Belinelli out there and see what he can do.

Not letting assets get away for nothing? It makes perfect sense. Don't
get me wrong, I'm not going to lose a night's sleep if Azubuke ends up
in Clipperland, but having a young serviceable player locked in at $3
million is an asset both on the court, and again, for potential trade
scenarios later on.

Exactly.

Pieces can be moved. Other players will become free agents by then.
What if the team lets 'Buke go for the reason you just stated, and
then two years from now when SJax is a free agent, they let him go as
well for the same reason? If Cohan is balking at adding talent down
the line, that's more an indictment of him than Azubuke's piddling
contract.
> He's a replaceable player, and in the short term I'd rather throw

Well, this organization has been riding the 'maintain cap flexibility
and develop our young players' mentality for years. If it isn't
painfully clear by now, that doesn't win championships. Neither does
constantly rotating useful players in and out.

I'm a little worried about Belinelli too, after his inconsistent play
in the summer leagues. Seems like the Kings' Douby abused him bad.
Seems like Beli can't play defense. I'd rather see Buke get minutes
than Beli, but the Warriors are stuck with Beli for at least this
year. If you subscribe to the theory that Nellie can always find a
competent guard for the bench I guess you let Buke go. >> Stay informed about: SFC: Clippers sign Azubuike, Ws have 7 days to match offer.. |

Thing is though, how many equivalent guys are there to Azubuike that are
minimum salary guys? I don't really have that answer, but am just
throwing it out for the sake of discussion.
IMO, at $3 million, Azubuike would always be a tradeable piece.

Then hopefully we'll lose a whole lot more games and play a lot more young
guys instead of deluding ourselves into thinking we're competing for the
8th spot with this roster.

Then they are in full build mode.

That's a good argument for matching.

Well, this was an asset they got for nothing and a pretty replaceable
piece IMO. Matching is not a bad idea IMO, but not matching is not a big
deal either. I think Azubuike could be a Raja Bell type player someday if
he really applied himself.

In the grand scheme of things, I think there's more hope for Azubuike to
be a good player than Belinelli, which makes it unfortunate that we spent
a first round pick on him (albeit a pick at the level where a lot of guys
just don't work out).

Defense is at least 50% will, even at the NBA level. Belinelli cares
about it even less than a guy like Monta. He'd never be a great defender
with his lack of athleticism, but he's just lazy about it IMO.
