LOS ANGELES · The 13 missed free throws by Shaquille O'Neal were part of the
tradeoff for 39 points of inside dominance by the Heat center.
The winning, 23-foot fade-away jumper by Clippers guard Corey Maggette with
a half-second left in the second overtime was minimized by O'Neal as "a
lucky shot.
Van Gundy said one of his regrets Friday was not going to O'Neal on the
final possession.
With his center making only the first of two free throws in his final four
times in that situation, Van Gundy opted to have O'Neal set a screen for a
pick-and-roll.
"We probably should have just kept it simple, not worried as much about
managing the clock, dropped it in to Shaq," Van Gundy said.
"I just couldn't put a stretch of two together," O'Neal said. "I would hit
one, but the second one was just a little off the mark."
The Heat was peeved that in its botched final possession the officials
declined to call a foul on the Clippers.
With a foul to give before the Heat would shoot free throws, coach Mike
Dunleavy implored his men to impede O'Neal as the center was setting his
screen.
"Mike was standing on the sideline yelling for them to do it," Van Gundy
said. "The guy did take a foul. They didn't get called."
Said O'Neal, "I'm the only player in the league where the coach says we're
going to use our fouls, but the refs don't see to call it."
