Why is Phoenix doing this? Sure, Marion wants out but their whole style
of play will have to change with Shaq in there.

The good news for Phoenix is that Shaq will be as motivated as he can be.
I don't know what the good news for Miami is.

Because Steve Kerr recognizes that the team has about a 2-year window
to make anything happen, and that Shawn Marion will opt out at the end
of the season and they will get nothing for him.

Aside from that I don't see any reason for Phoenix to make the trade.
From a personnel perspective it makes no sense. Shaq won't be able to
be a part of any of their fast breaks because he's simply not quick
enough. On the bright side he'll be there waiting when the opponent
makes their way back.

For Miami it's a major coup. Marion might not opt out if he's seeing
the ball more. Let's face it outside of Wade, Miami doesn't have
anyone. Since Shaq isn't actually playing these days due to injury,
they gain a superstar for nothing. He's also a superstar that, if he
opts out, frees up $17M.

Shaq was brought in to get the Suns over the hump in the playoffs.
With Nash dishing the ball, Kerr figures a semi healthy Shaq can still
get it done. If he grabs the rebounds that Phoenix has been giving up
on D, they go to the top of the heap for points allowed.

But it all depends on what Shaq's got left. I wouldn't make this
deal. It reminds me of the Patrick Ewing trade. This could backfire
bad enough to destroy the Suns. Got to give it to Kerr though. It
takes some balls to give up Marion (and his expiring 17 mil) and take
a $50M roll of the dice on a guy well passed his prime.

I agree with your assessment of Steve Kerr. The Suns have stuck to
their ways for quite some time and it just doesn't seem to work for
them during the post-season. It was as good a time as any to roll the
dice on this..

Kenz, you talk a good game but let's see how things play out at the
end of the year.

Marion would have opted out at the end of the season, and Phoenix Suns
fans would have cried foul just like silly Raptors fans who still
lament about losing McGrady for nothing. The only difference is
EVERYONE knew Marion was going to leave, whereas McGrady left it to
our imagination.

Look, personally I had my doubts about this trade because it's going
to change the team's identity. The run and gun can't work the same
way because it'll be a 4 on 5 on fast breaks. However, I still think
they're a top 5 West team and that they have just as much chance of
coming out of the West as before -- as much chance as the Lakers,
Spurs or Mavs. (With the 5th team being the Hornets)

My thinking is with this move and the Lakers getting Gasol, Dallas
will go after Jason Kidd to "even" things out. I really don't think
the Spurs need to do anything, they just need to go back relying more
on Duncan when it gets closer to the playoffs.

I couldn't disagree more. "It just doesn't work for them in the
post-season"? They were one (highly contentious) game away from winning it
all (unless you think that Cleveland could have beaten them in the finals.
Yeah, I thought not). Kerr will lose his job over this. They gave up one of
the most well-rounded, versatile players in the league for an almost-36 year
old Shaq who can't run and barely plays anymore. I can't think of a worse
big-man fit for the Suns. To me, "Shaq getting them the championship" isn't
even in discussion; "what the Suns could have gotten instead for Marion" is
the real question.

Miami, on the other hand, is laughing their asses off. Marion for nothing?
And you shed an albatross contract in the process? Kerr has given Miami a
glimmer of hope that they may be able to rebuild in a short period of time.
This trade is so bad that Isiah Thomas is sitting back and going "Damn, I
wish I'd thought of that!"

Shaq is going to be huffing and puffing in no time as well.

But was SHAQ the best they could do? I can't believe that. Actually,
letting Marion go for nothing would have been better. Now they're
stuck with an albatross of a contract.

San Antonio is always my default pick to win it all. It's a cliche but
it's also a good bet.

I'm hearing a different tone from you now. You came in with strong
statements that the Suns got fleeced in this deal and that Kerr would
lose his job, but now you're saying you just don't see it working out
for Shaq.

The fact that San Antonio is always everyone's default pick to win it
all shows why Steve Kerr rolled the dice here. It doesn't take a
genius to see that in 2 years, the Suns will have to blow up there
team.

Nope, same tone. I do think Kerr got fleeced - I *hope* that it works
out because, as I say, I like both Shaq and the Suns, but when I take
my rose-coloured glasses off - the ones where Shaq is five years
younger and opens up room for Amare to rip the basket off the
backboard - I just don't see it working. And I see that mammoth
contract of Shaq's just killing the Suns for years to come.

The more I think about this trade, the more I actually like it. For
me, I couldn't care less about Phoenix's future. I'm not a Suns fan,
I just like Steve Nash. I'm a Raptor fan, so the more teams that get
messed up the better. Miami got a nice break on cap space to build
around Wade -- but will Wade even stick around? 2 years from now they
might not have Marion, Wade, or even Pat Riley. They don't even have
any good prospects -- that team will be rebuilding from square one.

The only thing I do care about is seeing Steve Nash hoist up a
championship trophy -- and I think Shaq gives him a better chance of
doing it than Marion did. The more I think about what Shaq provides,
the more I see his "potential" -- even if he's old and slow, he
brings championship experience. He went to LA and they won a couple
of championships. He was a force. Then he went into Miami, and
brought them a championship. He wasn't as big a force, but he brought
everything else. There's something to be said about how players play
around Shaq -- he brings their best out because he demands it. I
don't know what it is exactly, but you look at that Championship Miami
team.. can you tell me honestly that they had a better team than
Dallas did? You just can't, because they didn't. They rose up and I
believe it was because of Shaq.

In Phoenix, he will be even less of what he was in Miami, but again he
brings that experience and leadership. Phoenix is a stacked team as
it is, and I think Shaq can take them over that hump everyone keeps
talking about.

Btw that contract will be high sought after in 2 years. It'll be an
expiring contract worth $20M. You don't get too many of those. Mitch
Kupchak turned Kwame Brown's expiring contract into Pau Gasol, and I
think Kerr in two years will do something similar.
