2 yr., $10 M--Sixers apparently offered 3yr., $10 M according to the
Inquirer.

Did the Bulls overpay or have salaries for forwards hit a new high
after Orlando's actions?

A reasonable, sensible, offer by the Sixers.

I'd have to say yes. I liked the way Smith played in the second half of
last year, but all things considered, in no way is he a $5 million/year
player.

Also probably true. How long it will last, that is another question. A few
games like he played the first half, the Bulls are going to be scratching
their heads, wondering why they are giving $5 million a year to the guy.
Presumably the Bulls are going to throw a lot of $$$ at Noah, and then give
him loads of playing time to justify the salary and high draft pick, so I
wonder what kind of minutes Joe Smith might get. Is P. J. Brown coming
back for another year?

When the Magic miss the playoffs this year, they will also wonder why they
threw all that $$$ at Rashard Lewis.

Ian is right, it's smarter to save dough for 2008 than overpay Joe Smith
now.

Steven Hunter had a career year (for him) last year, and I'm positive it
was because the Sixers moved him out from under the boards, and got him
facing the basket. Still, I'm dismayed with the idea of him again starting
at PF for the Sixiers this year. Probably Korver will get a lot of minutes
there. He's a better rebounder than given credit for, and plays big men
much better than smaller quicker guys. Still, ask him to play too much at
PF and his body will be one giant bruise by December. Let's hope one or more
of the rookies (Hill, Jason Smith, Amundson) is ready to make a contribution
or that Shavlik is able to take his game up a notch.

I'd still like to sign Mihm!

Probably a bit of both. It's unfortunate for Philadelphia since it
looks like they'll be stuck with Hunter and some combination of Jason
Smith, Herbert Hill, and Louis Amundson at the 4--not exactly the most
earth-shattering combination; in fact, it could easily be the worst PF
situation in the league. Still, I'm glad that King didn't go ahead
and give Smith the full exception. Save the money for next year.

I'd like it too but there's no evidence that the Sixers have even
contacted him. Plus, the way things are going, even if he can't get
full exception money, he would probably get $3-4M, which I still think
is probably too much to risk unless it were a short contract. The
situation at backup center though is dire and I guess it will be some
combination of Smith (don't have to specify Jason anymore) and
Randolph. I don't like either player very much so I'm not brimming
with confidence.

Thinking of the rookies, has anyone noticed the numbers that Glen
Davis has been putting up in summer league for the Celtics?: 12ppg (.
432%), 9.8rpg, 1,6apg, .8spg, 1.8bpg, in only 27 minutes a game. The
shooting could get better but he was 2-13 in his first two games and
has been much steadier (17-31) in his next three. The per minute
rebound and block numbers are great though (even passes better than
Carney). He's already showing a heck of a lot more than Smith and the
Sixers could have had him even later with that 30th pick. He sounds
like he'll turn out to be an ideal backup 5/4 in the future.
