They've been trying to trade Marcus Williams for anything for the last
year and a half. Devin Harris is a free agent after this season and I
doubt he wants to stick around and rebuild with the Nets on a LeBron-
space-friendly contract after tasting playoffs every year with the
Mavs. The others are very still unknown quantities. Najera at that
price was a steal and one we should have made -- that's a guy the
Knicks really could have used.

I'm not trying to piss in your Nets-flavored oatmeal, but I look at
the Nets roster for 2010 and see Vince, Yi, Najera, and a bunch of
rookie question marks. It's awful early to make calls either way,
especially ones like this:

> It doesn't look like much now but Vandeweghe/Thorn have a good hand to

That's getting a little ahead of oneself, methinks.

Didn't realize that. I guess GMs around the league see what Capn'O
sees in him.

If Harris is a piece they want to hold on to the Nets will bid high to
keep him. They are, at this moment, on the books for 20 mil. All of
their rooks can be resigned after the big free agent signing IIRC. So
with the cap set at 58 million they have 38 million dollars to work
with. More than enough to pony up Harris AND sign LeBron AND make
other moves in the interim - like, for example, packaging Simmons'
expiring (next season) and one of their prospects that season for a
longer contract of their choosing as other teams try to cut payroll.

Piss away. I hate the Nets.

They would have to have pretty bad luck for _none_ of those guys to be
rotation players considering what they've already shown, no?

No no no. Remember that your roster has to be 15 men, and remember
that if you're looking at hoopshype it's not including all of the
various rookie qualifying offers and team options, which total another
$19M by themselves. You could argue that they could let all the
rookies go or trade them, but even if they did that they're unlikely
to replace them with cheaper players, right?

So, that brings you to $40M based on what's there right now ** not
$20M ** for a total of ** nine players **. Now you're talking about
adding Harris -- and he's going to want, say, a salary no less than
the $8M per season he currently makes, so let's figure in another $10M
per for Harris. Now you want to trade Simmons' contract for another
longer contract? There's another $10M, and voila, there you are at
$60M, over the $58M salary cap already without a penny of the $20M or
so of cap space you'll need for LeBron, and depending upon the Simmons
trade you may still need another four players to have a complete
roster.

Dig it?

The rookies and sophs? Brook Lopez, Marcus Williams, Ryan Anderson,
Josh Boone, Maurice Ager, and Chris Douglas-Roberts? I don't see any
sure things in that group.

Actually, I've seen all those guys play. They all have a spot on an
NBA roster. Lopez COULD be a solid NBA starter. If you mean all-star
by sure thing, you're dead on correct.

So does Jerome James. Your point?

> Lopez COULD be a solid NBA starter.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda...the jury's still out. Way out. Way too far
out to be declaring that the Nets are the best set-up for the LeBron
sweepstakes, as El Capitan is unsupportedly indicating.

Right now, I see the Cleveland Cavaliers as being the best set-up for
LeBron sweepstakes. They're his home team, his current team, his
legacy team and they have a completely blank slate for the 2010-11
season. The Nets? Anything's possible, but there's no reason to
think that they have a leg up more than anyone else who has cap
room.

All the Jay-Z stuff is just fluff written to sell newspapers. I like
Jay-Z too -- like me, I suspect LeBron isn't going to change his whole
life around just to get a little closer to him.

Beyond that, the Nets have no special advantages over anyone else.
We'll see what the cap numbers and good assets are around February
2010 and we'll have a much better idea of what happens then with the
free agent bonanza.

Nets traded him to the warriors for a future lottery protected 1st round
pick.

I think this is a win for both teams. Nets are rebuilding for the
future and the pick gives them a potentially middle first round pick
(I don't see the Warriors being in the high 20s or anything). The
Warriors needed a bigger PG as a backup to Monta Ellis who could
potentially play some minutes alongside Ellis. Win Win. If Williams
develops into a real player, all the better for GS. If not, they'll
cut him loose after the season. I don't see him as anyone's long term
solution at PG but he could be a solid backup. Next year's draft does
not project to be anywhere near as deep as this one and looks to be a
particularly weak one if you look at the draftniks boards, which means
if the pick is for 2009 the Warriors don't give up all that much.
Flip side is the Nets HAD to move Williams as he was already making
noise that could have been disruptive if it festered. They have their
PG in Harris and Dooling.

Side note: Harris could turn into an all-star if he creates a
consistent shot for himself. He's one of the quickest players in the
league.

The pick is for 2011. This was mostly just a salary dump.

2011 protected to 14th (lottery)
2012 protected to 11th
2013 protected to 10th
If they do not get a player though 2013 the nets only get a couple of 2nd
rounders.

Am I the only person here who thinks we don't need one of the teams in these
pairs in the same city: Yankees | Mets, Knicks | Nets, Giants | Jets,
Rangers | Islanders.

It's been a while. I'd rather have a champion from NY in each sport, than
multiple teams.

I'm not sure one thing has anything to do with the other.

(And we have had a champion from NY in each sport within the last
decade and change -- minus, of course, basketball).
