Stanley Resigns as Mystics Head Coach
Team Begins Search for New Coaching Staff
January 21, 2004

President of Washington Sports & Entertainment Susan O'Malley today announced
that Marianne Stanley has resigned as Head Coach of the Washington Mystics.

"There is no doubt that Marianne is one of the most respected and
accomplished coaches in the history of women's basketball," said
O'Malley. "We wish her the best as she pursues other endeavors."

O'Malley added, "As we move forward and evaluate potential coaching talent,
our goal is to bring together the components to take the Mystics to the next
level."

Linda Hill-MacDonald has also resigned as Assistant Coach of the team.

Stanley was named Head Coach of the Mystics on April 4, 2002. She compiled a
26-40 record over two seasons (2002, 2003). In 2002, she led the Mystics to its
second post season appearance in team history, finishing 3-2 in the first two
rounds. Stanley served as an assistant coach for the Mystics during the 2001
season prior to her promotion. Hill-MacDonald was the Mystics Assistant Coach
for the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

The search for the Mystics new head coach will begin immediately. O'Malley as
well as Mystics Senior Vice President of Business and Basketball Operations
Judy Holland Burton and Mystics Player Personnel Consultant Pat Summitt will
oversee the process.

Mmmm, is this opening the door for a specific candidate I wonder? What funny
timing.

Hughes would be a really good coach for DC and would break the streak of
former NBAers. Because of the timing, I suspect Mimus is on the money with
the prediction.

I'd have to agree that Dan would be a great fit for the Mystics. His demeanor
and professionalism are exactly what that team needs. No doubt Vickii Bullett
and all the other players are sick of being screamed at by nincompoops.

My only concern is that Hughes makes that team an instant contender as they
have lots of talent. He was always able to do a great deal with a much more
limited Rockers team.

Yep. And didn't the Mystics take a big step up with Chasity Melvin? As a
Sun fan I am a little apprehensive about all that improvement, but as a
league supporter, I realize that it's about time those great fans in DC had
a team worthy of all that adulation. If things go as projected, and DC
takes Alana Beard, what will their starting line-up look like? Seems like
point guard is a glaring weakness in an otherwise strong rotation (SDS would
come off the bench I suppose).

An the fullcourt press site, it was said in a message board message that the
Mystics would be interested in Nell Fortner except her asking price is about
twice the league average.

I have to wonder why they'd be interested as one could say she underperformed
with the Fever. On the plus side, if she were named head coach the Fever would
probably be able to trade McCray to her.
