sounds like Phoenix is the strong horse for the 2009 All Star game (the 3rd
one they've had since 1975)..and Toronto is making a case for the 2008 AS
game..
houston has the 2006, but I'm not sure who has 2007. The NBA needs to get
it's head out of it's ass and give it to Portland in 2007 (and even then, I
think it's only about 10 years too late)

I agree. and if the Blazers would at least call the NBA out on it's stupid
criteria, I'd be ok with it.

Steve Patterson has bought into and agreed with their position, for what
it's worth. He affirmed it in a converation with me about it during a Fan Ad
Board meeting.
He (said he was) working with Katz before she left office on Blazer/Paul
Allen co-investment with the city in a "Headquarters Hotel" that would serve
the Rose Garden complex and the Oregon Convention Center, but that's
probably deader than a doornail given Tom Potter's election and Paul's RG
bankruptcy.

Seattle will host a Super Bowl long before Portland will even get an
honorable mention for an AS game.

I happened to stay at a hotel in LA last year which was part of the
All-Star festivities. It was my understanding that there were about 4-5
hotels which were designated as 'official' by the NBA, although they were not
all booked solid. (In fact, the luxury hotel I stayed at cost less than average
on that weekend and there was no problem getting a room on short notice.) I
realize that Portland does not have 26 4-5 star hotels like LA does, but are the
accomodations really so stark that they cannot handle a couple thousand people
from the NBA and another fifteen thousand attendees? A quick check on
Expedia shows 7 pages of hotels, including 9 that are rated 4 stars. What
is the major reason Portland is not an option?

And the 15,000+ attendees is assuming not a single soul will purchase a
ticket in the local area.
As for the hotel rooms, you would think that after Portland spent all that
money on a 'much needed' extension to the 'popular' convention center, a
major hotel or two would have been erected to supply all that demand for the
new convention space and all the thousands and thousands of people that will
flock to Portland to have their convention. >> Stay informed about: All Star game |

I think they use that as a criteria..that the hotels are not "close" to the
hotels. Since most of the nicer hotels in Portland are in SW "Downtown"
portland, and the Garden is in NE "downtown" portland..
it's bullshit is what it is. Really, I think it's because of 2 reasons. The
NBA doesn't like us (not trying to be a victim) and the city itself won't
dole out hte money to help the blazers get the game.

Yes, and...?

I guess my point is that Portland already seems to have enough hotels,
doesn't it? Or is that the argument against having the All-Star game?

How far is this? It is 13 miles from where I stayed (and saw players stay)
to Staples.

Well, I can say that having the game isn't very exciting anyway, since
(as has been said) locals pretty much won't get tickets. The All-Star
Game is the NBA equivalent to the Oscars. The former players, legends,
and people in the game now get together and have a big party. It doesn't
offer much for the fan of the game except for the game itself, which is
difficult to get tickets for.

1. The city is considered a hick town by NBA standards.
2. The arena needs fixing up, but it probably won't happen
because nobody wants to pay for it.
3. The team has become one of the worst in the NBA, and has been a
total non-factor during All-Star Weekend for the last two seasons
(no all-stars, rookies, sophomores, dunkers, celebrities, etc)
4. The February weather was nice this year, but that's not usually the
case. >> Stay informed about: All Star game |
