Sue Bird can play basketball. Last year's first team all-wnba and this
year's Olympian justified her selection to both tonight. 9-11 from the
field, 5-6 from three point range, 2-2 from the free throw line, 5 assists,
2 steals, 25 total points. Best game I've seen her play in Los Angeles.
Maybe her best game ever. With Lauren Jackson out injured, Sue Bird had an
opportunity to show what she do. The rest of the Storm players as well.
However, they still fell to the Sparks, 81-80.

Tamecka Dixon has been showing off her gymnastic skills during games since
the departure of Coach Cooper. At least once a game she has done a tumbling
run or flip as the opportunity presents itself. Tonight she almost had a
opportunity to display her boxing abilities when she nearly got into a fight
with Betty Lennox of the Storm. As this was not a boxing venue, she was
disqualified from the game. Pity.

Mwadi Mabika has joined Milton-Jones on the Sparks' injured list. She
didn't play. The Italians were absent again tonight. The Sparks bench is
getting pretty short.

That should be Sparks 82, Storm 81.

It was indeed a great game by Bird. I don't think Jackson's injured;
the LA Times said she's still in Australia due to a sick grandmother.

The Storm usually seem very energized whenever they play the Sparks,
both in terms of playing hard and in terms of fisticuffs. It was a
couple of years ago the Latasha Byears and Michelle Marciniak (then
with the Storm) got into it. Byears and Marciniak -- there was a pair
of "girls most likely to" -- most likely to get into a fight. Dixon
and Lennox, also no surprise, although in their case it's simple
intensity, whereas Byears always seemed to have a chip-on-her-shoulder
thuggish attitude (I did like watching her play though, the Charles
Barkley of the WNBA, although without the offensive skills), and
Marciniak seemed to specialize in antagonizing opponents. Dixon and
Lennox don't seem particularly hostile or violent, just intense and
feisty.

I had missed the announcement about Mabika, how long is she expected
to be out?

I think they played only 7 players against the Storm. Great, exciting
game. Most exciting WNBA game that I've seen in person (there've been
some more exciting ones that I've seen on TV, e.g. Weatherspoon's and
Teasley's last second game winners).

The Sparks have a pretty serious rivalry now with the Seattle Storm.
More than anything else because they have the two best women
basketball players in the world on their respective teams. Also, probably
the two best point guards too.

Seattle could look forward to a better future as Jackson is ten years
younger that Leslie. The Sparks are starting to show their age.

Mabika sprained her ankle. She was still in street clothes for the Detroit
Shock game over a week later. Don't know when she'll return. If it's just a
sprain, it should be soon.

The league has gotten very competitive.
