Still a controversial subject here to some extent. Best explanation
is that Buss preferred Kobe to Shaq, saw Kobe making more money
for the Lakers than Shaq over the remainder of their careers, saw
that Kobe (being younger) had a larger upside. And Shaq may have
pissed Buss off as well. Personally I still think Buss may have
blown it, but I'm willing to see if Kobe's mental approach to the
game can continue to mature.

When you consider Shaq's continued decline because of aging, coupled with
his propensity to NOT report to the Lakers in shape, which would no doubt be
enhanced by signing a final massive extension, yes, it would have been a bad
thing.
