Phoenix will sign Johnson to Atlanta's terms and trade him to the Hawks for
two-year guard Boris Diaw, two first-round picks (a protected Atlanta one
and another the Hawks acquired) and a $4.9 million trade exception that can
be used to offset salary gaps in a future deal.

The arrow points both ways in the blame game. Johnson was upset that the
Suns would not give him $50 million over six years last summer and then
offered $60 million over five years last month as a counter to Atlanta's
maximum deal.

He had hoped Phoenix would open July with a huge offer, became upset when he
was asked to choose between offers and rejected a Suns request to
restructure the $69.6 million.

His Atlanta deal will include a $20 million payment this month.

Johnson told several people that being a third option on the Suns was
"unacceptable." He reportedly resented teammates' star treatment and
disliked Amaré Stoudemire after a March halftime incident in Miami.

After Dwyane Wade's 19-point half, Stoudemire barked at Johnson in front of
the team: "Are you going to play any (expletive) defense?"

Stoudemire got seven shots in the next game and then sat out two with ankle
inflammation. Johnson played his best ball after that but told friends he
would never re-sign.

Oh my God, Joe Johnson, you are a woman.

But: he was upset because Amare Stoudemire was mean to him, resolved never
to re-sign, and then was upset when Phoenix didn't make him a big offer in
July. Which was after this halftime in March, if I've got my chronology
right.

And why TF didn't he say anything about this a month ago? Half the NBA
would've been trying to swing a sign-'n'-trade -- did he WANT to get stuck
going to Atlanta?

And what does Stoudemire getting seven shots and then having an inflamed
ankle have to do with anything?

Is Phoenix intentionally not trying to sustain last season's success?
All the Suns had to do was keep Joe Johnson and sign Donyell Marshall,
and trade Q for someone better than Kurt Thomas who isn't the answer to
helping Amare. Additionally, why'd the Suns sign Raja Bell to about $5
million a year??
Imagine this Suns' lineup ...
SF Shawn Marion - the reliable Mr. Double-Double who'll give you 19 ppg
and 10+ rpg
PF Donyell Marshall - he shoots the 3 and will give you 8-9 rpg
C Amare Stoudemire - just needs to play with more intensity on defense
PG Steve Nash - he'll coordinate everything masterfully
SG Joe Johnson - he shoots the 3 and can create his own shot
Bench: SG Jimmy Jackson and PF Ike Diogu (trade Q for Golden State's
1st rd. pick ... look at how much they paid Fisher, they would've done
it)

And they would still lose to the Spurs. Small ball does not work when
the other team can control the tempo, and the other team can take
advantage of your lack of interior defense.

And the Hawks will change this how?

Wait a minute, they can't even play small ball with Phoenix.

Guess they will still lose to the Spurs, also.

Kurt Thomas will help. The previous poster seems to be completely
oblivious to the fact that Kurt Thomas is a rebounding machine. The
only question is whether he's over the hill yet.

He's young, man. That accounts for a lot, the skill level and the
decision, IMO.

Sort of. I read the Atlanta pick is Boston's (acquired in the Antoine
Walker deal); it's probably lottery protected but Boston will probably
make the playoffs as a low seed. It looks like a #13-#17.

The other is Atlanta's and is lottery protected; I'm just guessing
they've made some kind of deal on it, because if it's lottery protected
for infinity, the Suns might never get it.

From time to time, I read something that makes me want to run
about the room, slapping people and shooting them in the face
with seltzer water. Things like "George Bush is studying the
issue" or "Gallagher has enjoyed a fine career."

"Joe Johnson wants his own team to lead" is another. He's a
nice player but I don't know anyone that thought he could be a
#1 option for anybody. Or a #2 option for anybody. He's a poor
man's Rip Hamilton.

Might account for a lot, but doesn't account for a close-to-the-max
contract. He was the fourth best player on a good (not great) team.

watching Kurt Thomas in NY for years, he is excellent. One of the few
players on the Knicks worth watching. Gives tremendous effort, nice
touch, has size. He's not over the hill yet and I'd love to have that
guy on my team.

Regarding the Johnson signing and trade, I think it is absolutely
insane. It makes the Vince Carter trade look good.
