I think I'm already a bit peeved at Gillispie, since I've just read that
he's offered UK scholarships to _three Texan high-school guards_, two of
whom at least are _sophomores_ . . . .

I understand that these were undoubtedly players he already had his eye on
for A&M, and that he's using his UK leverage to go after 'em now, and
that he's looking to the not-too-distant future, but still--!

Repeat after me: "We need _forward power_! and we also need room for some
recruits from _Kentucky_!" _Thank_ you!

(A nice bulky JC center wouldn't hurt, either.)

((The tennis hard-court season had better get here soon, is all I can say,
or all I'll have left to do is chew on UK recruiting.))

I keep hearing that guard play wins NCAA championships, so doesn't it
make sense to have a team comprised solely of guards?

What would you rather have, a team with three 7-footers? We know how
that turns out.

They do seem to hang a bit longer.

What about starting five forwards, two 3-spots and three 4s?

One a late starter (Polish Basketball Syndrome) and the other taken out
for the year by our starting 2-guard in practice at the start of the
year, hardly three legit 5-spots (and the other one before that was
seriously physically underdeveloped-- Jenkins' Syndrome).

And then Morris, not the fastest and most agile of legit centers, went a
little mental on us a coupla times.

Nonetheless, I think the problem was _using_ them as much as them, for
example to set up 3s with the old inside pass and kickout (setting up 3s
has not been a UK forte of late).

Kentucky gets blue chip guards and they don't play *that* well and then
leave after a year anyway. They get seven footers and they don't play that
well and try to bolt to the NBA anyway. So now he's hoping to get some
luck with forwards instead. :-)

I'm facing two months of clay and and six weeks of grass tennis before we
finally get to the US hard-court season and I don't think I'm going to
make it.

I may sink to watching the NBA, although at least they're allowing zone
defenses now ("Go Tayshaun!"). . . .

Well . . . the US clay-courts aren't too bad (usually some kinda green or
blue stuff, seemingly a lot harder and faster than the European and Latin
American red stuff) . . . I'm enjoying Cha'leston and Jankovic's run there
(she's kicking Safina's butt in the final even as I type, after battling
Venus down to the wire in the semi) . . . .

And . . . <sigh> . . . _and_ I'll probably end up watching the French Open
on that horrible red stuff they play on, anyway, mumbling and cursing and
whining to myself the whole way . . . .

Like every year.

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up in the state I went to school, but
I've never understood the big deal about this. Get good players that
represent the school well, and that's great. If they happen to be
from Kansas, that's cool, but if the state doesn't have guys that are
good enough to play at the high D1 level, I'm not going to lose sleep
over having guys from California/Illinois/wherever else.

When state schools don't want to place full importance on non-revenue
sports, they restrict some number of them to in-state residents. This
is seen as less competitive...

Kids who grow up and play basketball in Kentucky most often are devoted to
the 'Cats and that should be encouraged as much as possible.

Indeed, I'd like to see the NCAA adopt a rule that half (or even more) of
your scholarships must go to in-state players, who played, if they played
the sport at all, in school (_both_ elementary _and_ high) in your state.

It would reely reely cut down on a _lot_ of the extracurricular
shenanigans.

That's a rule I definitely do NOT want to see. However, maybe it's
because I'm like Tom - I left my home state to go to college.
Furthermore, the team I root for (which is my home state's
university), would be at a severe disadvantage abiding by this rule.
